I'd suggest looking on the internet for gun resource packs or mods. You can take the textures from the forums section, and replace any pictures with your own. I couldn't have GIMP, so I did the hard stuff

Use Paint.NET, I use it all the time, and I totally recommend it.
    getpaint.net
BTW, resource packs use images with the .png extension. Paint is a horrible program to use.

Use either Paint.net or the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) for the best results. choose a resolution, and you might want to use other resource packs as a reference.

Actually, for 16x or 32x resolution packs, I recommend GraphicsGale. It's a sprite editor designed for 16 bit game graphics.

I personally love Paint.Net and use it for all my resource packs. However, if you have the chance of getting Photoshop, grab it. It's a bit more complicated but the results are even better. Also, never use Paint for resource packs. It creates weird glitches with pretty much every block with transparent parts.

    Paint doesn't support transparency.

I usually use a conjunction of GIMP and GraphicsGale, and it's proved pretty effective in the past.

Paint has no transparency. Don't use it. Photoshop isn't good at individual pixels. Go with GIMP or Paint.net.

They are 2 different programs made for 2 different situations. However, if I'm right, it's possible to edit texture packs in both of them.
