Has anyone read this book? I'm having a lot of trouble with Captain Beatty's speech he gives to Montag when he is sick. I understand that Beatty is explaining about the past and how it turned out this way but I just can't grasp it. If you have not read this book already I strongly recommend it.

Very good book! Great parable of what would happen in that situation. Also I do not remember the speeches meaning. :/

Not sure what you don't understand, but they use to be a normal world like today's society until the government restricted them. F451 is mainly full of people doing their day to day things mindlessly. Their lives are so fast paced that they don't have time to sit down and think, nor does the government want them to.

I read i. Beatty is explaining how people complained about books and how it created rifts between people. Knowledge is very powerful against the F451 government. The purpose was to make Montag aware of the hound.

Fahrenheit 451 was an OK book, but compared to other dystopian books and movies such as V for Vendetta and Equilibrium, it's nothing special.
