We all know ddos is a huge problem in this community, and it's very hard to get sufficient proof. I may have the solution. My idea is that when the staff gets a ddos report, then that person will get added as their friend in the hub so they can track the person. When he's online, the staff will log on as an alt, trying to piss he/she off. If it's true, then the staff will most likely get a threat / get hit off, then they can simply ip-ban the person.

This could work. Just 2 things.
    - The player could just deny the friends request
    - And if we do it that it forces them to become friends. Wouldn't it be suspicious that there is a new friend in their friends list even though they didn't add one?

The only problem being is that Staff getting hit offline wouldn't be fun and a hacked client that generates DDoS messages. It's quite hard getting around DDoS'ing... >.<

I mean, there would be some sort of a plugin, so that they cant deny it. They would just be added.

That would still be suspicious, that they couldn't deny it. Maybe every player should have every staff member as friend when they first log on a mcbrawl server.

Why would a person even do such a thing? I don't really know why.

But when new staff are accepted, wouldn't it be suspicious that a brand new friend is added?

    Off topic:
people get angry because they are jealous, @Gynamo got ddosed for no known reason... but it might be that he was ridiculously good ingame... he also was liked and well known among the community... there is not a single reason to do it...

on topic: as some have said there might be some flaws in this system... but if those are fixed... it can work out

    Too many flaws.

    - Person who could DDoS doesn't know your IP
    - (most) People are smart enough not to make a thread in chat.
    - Staff may not have a spare alt to use.

That would be good, maybe we can redo this whole idea:
In the current friend plugin, there is a feature that tells you what server a specific player is on. The staff could gain acess to a new item in the hub that lets you see players that they added through a command, for example /watch Gynamo. If a staff member added / removed a player from this list it would appear in the other staff members lists of rule breakers. Staff members alts would also have acess to this list.

The other reasons are good, but what i mean is that they might recieve a threat in a msg.

It could be like, you had a page with staff members and they would be Orange. This would too be a good thing so if people were needing help, and didn't had a forum account, they could just teleport to a server with a staff member. The name of the staff member would say what server they were mod on(If they were mod). So if you had trouble on like PvP you could teleport to a PvP mod.

Yeah like you wouldn't see the guy on the list but he sees you, I guess that makes sense.

Based on that sentence alone i'm going to have to say you don't have my vote on this idea.
Just seems an unproffesional thing to do and could just lead to more trouble being caused on a server.

I know it's not the best option, but to be honest i think we will need to do it, or come up with a better idea very quick. If this continues the way it does, mcbrawl will die out. Soon.

Would you rather have a few staff alts pissing off members off the community or other members getting their routers fried?
It's a bit more serious than a Minecraft community, as @YepImRobbie says what if a Mom wanted to go shopping or make a serious transaction online, but since her router was burned she couldn't.
What if she lost a job as she couldn't connect.
It's bigger than a Minecraft community, not sure if all the staff realize that.

It is a very serious issue.

It's your resonsibility to protect your selves, Chickenputty has even supplied you with a 4 page long security guide, which if followed will ensure you are fully protected against such attacks.

We're a Minecraft Gaming network who supply servers for you to play on, not a DDoS protection and advice service.

The things don't always work, if they did there would be no problem.
I guess you're right, and sorry for sort of ranting on you, but SOMETHING needs to be done.
