Okay, this is (in my opinion) a really viable idea. Currently the raygun is an extremely powerful weapon that can fire at high speeds with several shots loaded per clip. In the nerf coming up we have a potentially ruined weapon (like the law) to the point only very brave people use it. So to counteract this I would like to put this idea forward:
New raygun: identical firerate and explosion size with an overheat meter
Each shot you fire from the raygun adds one quarter to the bar, which recedes over time. Should you take four shots in rapid succession the raygun will overheat, dealing four hearts of damage to you and making the raygun useless for ten seconds. Normally the overheat bar cools down 1/8th per second. This essentially makes the raygun a gun that requires perfect timing to use at maximum efficacy.
Instead of having eight shots loaded you would instead have 32 shots total with no needed reload. This would make the gun amazing in the right hands. Also, the gun would OSK on a direct hit but only deal 1/4 of that damage as splash (making it what it was supposed to be, a hyper sniper rifle)

So, what do you think of this? An interesting spin on the raygun nerf? Or a bad idea?
Please say so in a relatively polite way please. Should you have suggestions do not hesitate to voice them

I don't know what to say. This would be a little bit to OP but the over heat idea is great. Also maybe the clip should be 20 like in real CoD.

What makes it OP is the massive clip size.

I dont think the massive clip size would mean anything if there is an overheat meter.

That's the idea, it would reward people who don't spam with a large ammo clip, but if you do spam your essentially out of the fight for ten seconds

So if you do not hit your target directly, but with splash damage, you can kill him, but it takes all four of your shots causing your raygun to overheat. Seems balanced.

Exactly, the raygun should serve as a single target support weapon, killing the target quickly, if you miss once that's fine but relying on missing (like raygun users nowadays) will screw you over

Well, that relying on missing stems from the fact that all my direct shots pass through them... So I have to hit the area around them...

This is a very nice idea, and could be the nerf that the Raygun has been needing for so long. However I don't really agree with the fact that if the gun overheats you will take damage. Instead I think that the gun should just become useless for said amount of time, thus emulating the effect of a gun overheating in real life. This coupled with a possible range nerf would perfectly balance it.

I like this idea! The ray has needed a nerf for so long. This would make it easier for zombies on maps where all you see is a butt ton of rays being fired at the zombies. Also, cowlick's range nerf idea is well needed too, as the current unlimited range is ridiculous, it should fade off at around say, 50 blocks or so.

More than 50 blocks... pistols have a range of 50 blocks... I think 75 would be better if you're going to limit the range

The person who rated it dislike might be some guy who spams ray at the root zombie for dear life.
