    Putty might have toggled around with the chat and stuck that there.
    I actually do not have any idea on what that is either.

    I have no clue why it's there. For me, it's a different symbol. Maybe the smiley face means a friend is talking?

    The Smiley face is there because in the font file in a texture pack the Creator can edit what the text looks like. In your texture pack, the Creator made that symbol a Smiley. In the default texture, it is a weird A symbol.
