I don't see this as a big surprise. Mojang is still an indie development team, so even with Minecraft success it could still be bought out.

The only real business reason behind this from Microsoft that I can see is that people have really been wanting Minecraft on Nintendo consoles. Mojang gets bought out, less competition for Microsoft.

However, I don't believe it would be as fun, and as Mojang focuses on the fun of games, they probably would deny it, like they have before.

 

Maybe Microsoft would make some big moves

I really hope they don't sell mojang/minecraft to microsoft, mojang does a great job at what they did with minecraft and there is no reason for them to stop now.

Microsoft is only buying it because it makes money. After that they will never touch it again and just sit back and enjoy the money they get.

 

There might not be anymore updates ever. Or they might still let the people who work on it like Jeb or Grum still program and update it, but Microsoft will still own it
