The "Donate" Meaning

    This is something I can't understant of Minecraft Multiplayer in general. Like for example, getting a Ray Gun is "Donating" getting MVP is "Donating". But it's not really. It's like I say "Im going to donate for a Coke" but NO. You are going to BUY a Coke (In this example). So why is BUYING , donating?

    The meaning of Donating is: To present as a gift to a fund or cause; contribute.
    But we PAY for X thing, and they RECIEVE something.

    What do you think about this?

    The word "donate" for Minecraft servers has become Slang for Buying.

    You're right, many minecraft servers do incorrectly use the word "Donate" where they should be using the word "Purchase" or "Buy".

    However, I think you'll find here at McBrawl, the word donate is used minimally. For example, I took a quick screenshot of the shop.mcbrawl.com home page, and in multiple places the word buy / purchase is used as oppose to Donate.

    Yes, the Shop page is cool and uses the words Buy / Purchase. I mean, In game. Also, thanks for your time Peas :grinning:

    I'm guessing it was originally just people ''donating'' for the server to stay up so they could pay for the servers costs.
    Now its turned into people Donation to receive items.

    Nah it's just a general term that you use to say that you give money for keeping the server up.

    Technically, when you donate to McBrawl or any Minecraft server, you are donating.

    You may object to this by saying 'But we receive items in return, therefor its a purchase.' However, when you donate an X amount of money to a server, they are not obliged to give you the items because it was technically a donation. However, as most of us know, most servers offer a 'gift' of some sort in return as a thank you for donating (although that's not how it's perceived).

    Have you ever seen a rich millionaire donate a large amount of money to a charity? The charity may send the donator a gift (such as a plaque, statue, etc). The donator didn't 'purchase' the plaque/statue, neither was the charity obliged to give it to him, but they did it as a thank you.

    Technically you are definitely right, but practically you buy the items. If you receive a gift in return for a donation, it is something unexpected and not obligatory, while you would be very mad if you didn't get your item or rank on McBrawl after donating.

    I fully disagree, which is why you will never see me use the word donate when talking about shop purchases.

    Minecraft servers initially started out as servers receiving pure donations for running, in return you would get something very minimal. However, as Minecraft has grown we now have automated SHOP systems where you can BUY a rank or item and fully expect to receive that item. If you do not, it's a fraudulent sale.

    The payments are also not being sent as gifts via Paypal. They are actually sent as a purchase, which Paypal will back up if you attempt to charge back for not receiving it.

    Servers that intentionally use the word donate are probably doing it to take some "edge" off of the word, purchase. They don't want to make it seem like you are buying an item because it seems unfair in a free to play server, but that's just my theory.

    The only reason why the word donate makes sense is because you are giving money towards a good cause, which would be the server's uptime. But, you aren't really giving since you are making a purchase.

    Oh My God. Probably the first post I made and Lord, Signatured and Putty REPLIED Here. Thanks to you guys for the feedback and moving it to "Off Topic". I didn't knew where to put it. But I meant that PLAYERS say it. Not shop. Go to any MCWar server and ask "How do I get raygun?" All of them, will say Donating/donate.

    Thats because those guns were always called donor guns I believe. I mean, its nothing wrong about using this word as long as everyone understands what it means in relation to Mc-War.

    Yeah, that's the reason. I just don't like the term donate, because it's not literally correct. But if we understunt, no problem.

    I love this because it is so true, servers use the term to cover it up. To make you feel good about your purchase, ooo it will help keep our server running, although this is true then shouldn't you just give the server a certain amount of money and expect nothing in return? That is why I want all servers that give you items for rewards to refer to the word purchase because it really is not a donation. Because so many servers reward you for donating the average minecraft user almost finds it to be a requirement to receive something from donating which is really sad, it really is..

    The stuff you donate for isn't considered worth money it's just a gift to say "thank you for donating have this."
