So about a week ago (f*ck with us and den we tweaking H*e) I finished re reading the harry potter series for fun. I had read it years earlier and had wondered what it would be like to re read them, and then watch the movies. Tonight I started with movie one. The story left out so many things that made the story make sense. Also MAJOR parts were altered that were key. For instance, on the way down to the find the philosophers stone:
after the game of chess where ron gets knocked out, Hermione and Harry were supposed to go through the next door to where there is a logic puzzle where there are... i think 7 potions (don't take my word on the amount) and each potion does something. Hermione is supposed to take the potion that goes out to save Ron after he gets knocked out, while Harry is supposed to drink the potion that allows him to go forward to get the stone. In the movie this part was COMPLETELY left out. After the chess game Hermione just took Ron back to the nursing area while Harry just went straight to the stone.

That is one of the more major parts in the book that should have been left in the movie. For those who will comment saying "Oh, the movie directors have to leave some things out so it can fit into a time frame" I understand.

But to brush major parts of the story aside for instance (AGAIN) how its Harry, Ron, Malfoy, and Neville (I'm pretty sure its Neville, and for sure not Hermione) that had to go into the forbidden forest. Yet they put Hermione in for Neville. Also they left out the part that got them in trouble.

Having read all of the books again it is upsetting that movie directors take away key aspects of the book. I waited for the majority of the movie for the potions scene, and as i said earlier it's not even in the film.

IF you read this whole thing you are a REAL champ!
(Sorry for grammatical errors; i'm tired af and i am not focused on grammar)

I'll be honest, there are some other movies that i have seen that were based of books and they weren't like it at all, or changed to make people enjoy it more *cough* *cough* divergent, and hunger games. The harry potter films are known to sticking to the story line due to the fact that the author J.K. Rowling had consulted directors. She also spoke to the characters about what would be happening, and how to play their roles better to fit the books characteristics. Rowling did this because while the movies were being made, the series wasn't over with. So overall the film was good in sticking to most of the story line, but still had some major parts that were missing, or changed. I think the film was fantastic though, because it really brought out mostly what i envisioned while reading the book.

I've read the Harry Potter books and in my opinion the movies were very good. Sure there left out a few details but, money doesn't grow on trees. Other movies that come from books are 10 times worse than the Harry Potter series.

Listen, many books are different from the movies and most movie try to cut off some parts just to not make it too long, sometimes this is the other way around, let me give you an example:

    Alice in Wonderland:
Movie had a dragon and the champions n sh*t while the book didn't.
The book had some fun and weird parts about "Lobsters" that danced around a lake, this lobsters... weren't in the movie or even mentioned.

Still, the movie is good and the book is well written.

I agree with @UnknownIdentity .. sometimes the movies just don't include things because they don't want it too long. And if you think about it, sure it can be disappointing but they already put so much time and money into the rest of the movie (Harry potter in this case )
