Swearing. It's human nature, right? For me, I don't swear much, with a few exceptions of occasionally in chat. Now of course, I don't direct it at anyone, at least for the most part, and when I do, it's mostly for comedic purposes. For example, I get 3v1ed in game, and I say "Well Sh*t, xD". One of the biggest turn-away in servers is a chat filter. There are servers that even go as far to temp-ban/ban. Most of the Minecraft community is relatively older, and more mature, and if swearing were to be allowed, I doubt it would drastically change someones opinion in a negative way. Now, Of course there are people who do want a chat filter, such as younger players, which, I feel, could be easily worked around. Maybe an option to disable it? Who knows. But I honestly can't stand those servers that filter it out. I even have a few friends who have turned away the server because of it. A filter seems childish, and it honestly has even made me consider turning the server away.

On a side note, "Do not argue with the staff" is one of the worst possible rules to have on a server. This is essentially Dictatorship (to an obviously much smaller degree). I get that it's a sign of respect, but really? This means that if a moderator thinks that an Idea sounds good, no-one can argue. Sure you could politely suggest it, but seriously, who POLITELY SUGGESTS THESE DAYS?
    (ಠ_ಠ)

This was not intended to offend anyone on the server, merely to get this off of my chest and give a few suggestions at the same time. I thank you for reading

Im not sure what community you came from but ours is of the younger ages. Im fairly sure the rule/censor is there to discourage people from swearing at people, but im sure if you shout a curse word that it wouldnt mean the end of the world.

At McPvP, the player-base varied from ages 9-16 generally, with a few younger, and a few older. The average age was arund 13, and literally the only rule McPvP had for oh so long was "No cheating." And I'm not gonna lie, I had a hell of a fun time with it. Freedom of speech, and the right to do nearly whatever you wanted within the guidelines is probably what kept me for 3+ years.

I understand the need to watch your swearing as this is a more child-friendly community which is a good thing. Cursing is obviously a social construct, and the negativity with cursing only comes with purpose.
"Go to hell" and "Rot in a fire forever" are no different in negativity, I'd argue that the second statement is harsher too.

I don't really mind minimal cursing as nobody really did it on the forums in CTF discussion back then, but I would like to have a chat filter option on the servers since I don't like censorship on my servers since I start thinking of all the possible words that fit in **********

Chat filters are for keeping the server clean. I don't curse/swear/whatever you want to call it, but I'd be fine with people swearing. 8 and 9 year-olds on the other hand...

The "Do not argue with staff" rule is extremly common, on Minecraft servers and also in real life.
It does not mean anything the staff says is right and out of the question, this rule mainly applies when a Moderator warns you for swearing, glitching etc. If Moderators had to discuss whether the player was really swearing/glitching everytime they give a warning, they wouldn't be able to do their job effectively.

You can of course discuss rules, plugins and ideas with staff, as long as you discuss it politely.

Isn't the average age of a Minecraft player 7-12? I really don't think that Minecraft's community is made up of mostly older people which to me is a good reason for a swear filter.
As much as I dislike anything swearing-related, I must admit that this could be a viable solution if people really want to constantly read profanities.
Firstly, this rule does not mean you can't have a discussion with a staff member. It really applies more to situations when a staff member tells a player to stop doing something, and the player starts getting all defensive or blatantly refuses to do as the moderator says. Secondly, behaving tactfully and respectfully is the best way to get things done around here. Of course you can have a different opinion than a moderator and "argue" why you think differently as long as you are respectful in what you say. This goes for everyone, not just moderators.

    This.

You moved to a new community, and you must accept that there are younger players. If I were to move from Canada to Jamaica, would it be common sense that I bring clothes suitably for their weather?

Think of moving an entirely different server with a separate community to Brawl. What changes must be made in order to adapt to this migration?

To answer the last comment, "arguing with staff" works out fairly well here. There is a major difference between discussion and arguing. Usually, arguing with staff happens when people try to harass and swear at mods. The staff should always be up for polite discussions. And, if you feel a mod is abusing his power and will not listen to your discussions, report the incident to a higher staff member. They will usually sort things out in a fair way.
And for swearing, in our community before the chat filter was implemented, the chat was turning quite toxic if I remember. Sometimes the chat was just spammed with swearing, so a filter was necessary to add at the time.

As somebody who does swear (a little bit too much), I don't really ever get the 'protect the children' argument. I mean, if kids from the age of 9-12 are on this forum, I highly doubt that they've never seen or heard those words before. I also doubt that in the age of the internet, they've never used those words. In fact, from observation of the forums and in-game when I played, it's usually the younger kids (or, in fairness, those who act young), using excessive swearing in the first place. So, censoring swearing isn't going to save the kids, it's at best going to slightly delay them.

As for making a nicer environment, I'm not so sure about that one either. Sure, maybe it stops people from swearing, but at this point having the asterisks means that everyone knew you were swearing in the first place, and all they're doing is making it slightly more obvious that someone was swearing at a glance. Besides, **** could be a varity of things, and is it really censoring the swearing when seeing those asterisks allows for 4 possible swears instead of the intended one?

If you want to maintain the reputation of the forums as a clean place, see the arguments above, as well as considering the fact that you're also likely to turn away teenagers looking for the freedom to say what they want, teens who likely have their own jobs and stuff and would stay if it weren't for the censorship of speech.

I'm not even going to touch on the arguing with mods, but suffice to say that if arguing a point is disallowed (which I doubt it is, obviously), then you're not running a fair establishment. Everyone should be allowed to argue their innocence.

We didn't move voluntarily, we were kind of bought. The reason a lot of us are here is to play the game we were still playing.

It's not like we decided to move to jamacia, we just woke up there one day.

    Yeah yeah, double post.

However, you were told in advance, weren't you? Also, we provide server rules for a reason. They're not really hard to follow.

Uh... no. I logged in one day and hclewk (our previous head owner guy) had basically said "k you guys are owned by brawl bye". No heads up, none at all.

I'm not arguing they're hard to follow, I'm arguing they're unnecessary. I will still follow them, mind.

How are they unnecessary? I'm not contradicting you, I'd just like to hear your opinion.

Read the wall of text I posted a few minutes ago, I'd rather not add a few more word walls here :stuck_out_tongue:

Edit: yeah, I get how debates work, I didn't take it as a contradiction. Still, thanks for being polite

IMO the rules are fine. If you have a problem with the way a mod is handling things or you think you've been unfairly banned, you can always tell another mod and they'll sort it out for you more often than not, or tell you if you're wrong.

As for the no swearing rule, it's a great one: players can be as young as 4 or 5 years old in some cases, and I've seen many examples of parents being worried about what sort of language their children are exposed to on Minecraft. If Brawl has a reputation as a kid-friendly server, that's a weight off a lot of people's minds. It's not really something that needs to ba argues about.

I read it, and I see your point. However, there are a few flaws:
Nowadays, lots of children swear because they are exposed to an environment where swearing is the norm.
Here in Brawl, we try to clean up that hateful, dirty environment. Often times, players are discouraged to use such words in the chat to begin with strictly because of the asterisks. Personally, I'd feel highly discouraged to even type such a word if I knew it was going to be blocked out anyway. That's just my personal preference, although I know a lot of people think this way as well.

Back when there was no filter, I remember the constant flood of people just saying those words randomly, with no point to it. Also, the flame was much more severe than it is now, and it included high amounts of un-blocked swearing.

In my opinion, this rule allows young players to play peacefully without having to be molded with the constant flow of harsh insults and swearing. Remember, their brains develop heavily at this point; I know the Internet has certainly molded a part of me to who I am today, and if they are constantly exposed to a negative environment, what do you think would be the product of it?

I can understand that. I will never actually play any games anymore so I'm not likely to get banned, but censorship is always a good topic to discuss about.

I know we just moved here too, trust me. If they keep them or remove them doesn't concern me, but more the principal of the things. If the kids are old enough to be on the forums and chatting, should they still be protected from swearing? Also, why not have segregated servers, with kids (12 or less) in one and teens (13 over)? that way the kids could have a chat filter and have fun against others of their own age, while the teens would be able to trash talk as they're wont to do on the internet and not have to worry about the younglings?

    Ballparkin' ideas at random here.

Edit: This one was to Rhoske. It's hard to type from my phone right now, lemme get to an actual computer so I can reply properly.

If we were to do anything, the best and simplest solution would be to make the swear filter an opt-out feature. In all honesty, though, I think it's better that we just encourage people not to swear.

I see where you are going with segregated servers, but I don't think there are quite enough people on Brawl for this to be implemented and still be effective.
Also: I've been on forum sites since I was the age of 6, and a lot of them blocked swearing. Kids believe everything, and if they see that swearing is a common lifestyle among the people of the age you look up to, how would I be able to tell if it's wrong or not at that age?
