This thread is not an idea nor is it a Map Submission. This post is about how I make trenches and it is aimed towards forum members such as sturmspitz and Niek_ to help them make trenches in maps. Now I came up with this because trenches were used frequently in many real world wars so people making custom maps could learn a little from this.

    1) First, you might want a flat terrain to start off with such as plains and deserts. If you are building in a high elevated biome or a biome with many trees, you might want to clear out the place or flatten it. You could leave some mountains alone if you are building in a mountain biome because the mountains might provide decoration or cover in your custom map. All you need is a decent spaced map that is very flat ( the map could be 90 x 50 blocks wide and the elevation should be 1-8 blocks high ) but another alternative is doing it on flatworld.
    2) So start making the trench by placing around a few blocks of TNT in a horizontal line and setting one TNT block at one end off. Place a certain amount of TNT in a line so that the explosion won't affect the blocks at the boundary of the map so the TNT blocks should be at least 5 blocks away from the map perimeter
    3) You should see what is known as a trench and now you go about 10 blocks away from that trench and you repeat the same process

Note: There are 2 types of maps that you can make using trenches: One is where one team spawns at a low elevated part of the map where there are trenches and the other team spawn at a higher and farther location from the trenches ( this is pretty much like blowout and dday ) . Another type of map with trenches is the whole map having trenches where both teams spawn on the opposite ends of the map and they all fight in trenches

    4) Now you decide what kind of trench map you're going to make so now you decorate the trenches first
    5) Trenches are narrow if you search them up on Google Images so you could make them about 2-5 blocks wide
    6) The next thing is most trenches have no cover but you can make a cover if you feel like it. I suggest the ways to making a cover is to place fence posts on both the long sides of the trench ( the fences don't have to connect to each other ) and then place slabs on the fence posts. You could also cover the entire trench with the slab you are using but I don't recommend it because there wouldn't be a lot of space to go across the trench
    7) If you want to make an entrance into a trench you could either: Make a 1x1 space to put a ladder that leads to the trench, make a small stairway, or just nothing at all
    8) Another decoration is you could make the walls slabs, fences, or trapdoors. The walls could look somewhat better if you use fences or trapdoors
    9) This is completely optional but you can place things like chests and crafting tables to fit in with the battlefield look. You can also place torches on fence posts but the server is never at night time so it's optional too.
    10) So you made multiple trenches on your custom map. Now do steps 5-9 for each trench you have created.
    11) Now if you are doing the 1st type of map that is mentioned on the note, you must make a high elevated location on one end of the map. It's like the blue team's section on dday so you make a tall mountain wall that is about 20 blocks high and you make fortresses and bases of whatever you want as long as it look realistic. So the picture below is what I drew myself using Paint to help you think what this type of map looks like.

Did you find this thread helpful in making a trench based custom map? If not, you can type " How to make trenches in Minecraft " on Google Images.

The problem with using TNT is that you are sometimes not able to get out of the hole without changing the terrain. So you have to make sure that you can get out of the hole.

Get out of the hole by creating entrances such as ladders.

This is a good idea i think, because on a map like dday the blue team (higher up) is normally going to have the advantage. If the red team had trenches at the bottom, they could have a chance at sniping or killing more of the blue team.
