Before this gets too heated, I will just say this. It is unlikely that anyone will have their mind changed. There is no concrete proof on either side of the argument. Religious people truly believe a God exists. Non-religious people do not. The most legitimate claim a non-religious person can make is that there is no proof that God exists, but that argument doesn't work because religious people use what they believe to be proof. And maybe it is proof. The problem is, there is no right answer.

If we're going to do this, at least make a post with some ground rules, like
'no flame unless u want ban'
'no preaching or blatant attempts to convert (that goes for everyone)'
'no ad-homs, which include things like 'you're going to hell' '
AND ABOVE ALL

I think that Nom said it quite well. There truly is no point in this thread. Arguing will just lead to insulting, direct or indirect, and those who don't see the truth aren't ready. They're time will come and all will be revealed to them. I don't even understand why this thread was created. Why does this have to viewed as a topic to debate? Can't both sides respect each other? Even though I want to try and convince people here to accept God into their life, it just isn't time for some of them. If anyone does want to discuss this with me, without flaming or negativity, please PM me.

I already posted something on the person who made the last religious thread, and I'll repeat it again.

These threads are pointless. There is no point in them. If you make them, it makes you look like an idiot.
There should be a new rule: No topics about religion, politics and money. These conversations, most of the time, end up in a stupid flame war and are also COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT for a minecraft forums.

 

I'll say it again then. The old MCPVP forums had a thread that was 600 replies long, and was pretty flame free for the most part. @NomNuggetNom can testify, that thread went pretty well, with a couple of flamers but no more than you'd expect there to be. Again, in that thread, we had genuine questions and debates with at least a couple of people re-thinking their religious beliefs without (as far as I know) ever having been forced. I made a few mormons question their religions, and I learned a few new things about Mormons that I never knew before, and it was all pretty friendly. There was even one guy who responded politely to a proselytizer while still backing their arguments with the best facts they could find.

It IS entirely possible to have conversations about religion and beliefs on the internet, it's entirely possible to be civil, and it's entirely possible to learn something new, if not change someone's mind. I don't know how you guys all got it into your heads that all threads about religion will be flame wars, but if you only respond to them with flame, you're making a self fufilling prophecy. You're flaming a thread because you think a thread will be flamed.

The only people making the topic a taboo are you guys.

NOW. Whether or not it's appropriate for a minecraft forum. I'd think it is, because it's
A) a neutral ground with no inherent ties one way or the other.
B) entirely possible to ignore the thread if you're uncomfortable talking about the topic,
C) such a remote place that you don't have to worry about having an echo chamber effect because of other people chiming in one way or another.

Again, if you're not comfortable with the topic, MUTE IT. You don't have to click on the threads if you're not interested, and you'll never be the wiser as to what goes down on the thread. It's inappropriate to debate it on a topic about MCwarZ zombie skins or something like that, but a dedicated thread can be easily ignored.

Who cares if you had one? That doesn't mean we feel comfortable talking about such topics. I believe in preventing the argument before it offends other people. I also feel like such discussions are too ambiguous and are filled with flawed personal logic and opinions, both of which make me cringe.

... Again, if you don't like the topic, ignore it. At this point, you're taking offense on the behalf of others, which leads to more problems than it solves. If the topic would make them uncomfortable, they don't have to reply to it, and once they do, they're opening themselves up to debate. I don't know about you, but at least one side, when argued correctly, is pretty much nothing but facts and logic, although I agree that a lot of the time both sides of the argument can be pretty biased. That doesn't mean that the conversation isn't worth having, mind.

And I hate the whole idea of 'don't offend people', because offense is such a dumb thing to pander to, but I'll let that slide for another time because, obviously, this isn't a conversation you're comfortable with.
