That the saying 'Deus Ex Machina' is partially censored in the chat because it contains two words in a different language that, when misread intentionally and when a space is removed in between them, spell a slang term for intercourse?

Because I found that out. And now I'm pissed off... just a little. I know I made my point about the chat filter in a previous thread, but discovering that it's so broken as to block words like 'sex' when they're a) not even a swear word, b) being used IN CONTEXT, and c) being used at ALL, infuriates me.

Your chat filter does not actually do anything. People still swear, and people know exactly what the asterisks mean. Even funnier is that if people can't understand what the words behind the asterisks are, they won't understand what the words are in the first place, rendering the asterisks useless. Think about it: if some five year old kid has never seen the word 'eff ew see kay' (and the fact that I can do that makes my point some more) , do you really think that they'll understand what it means? Do you even think they're reading the chat? And, if they ARE old enough to read and understand the chat, then you've got to realize that they're likely to ask their parents why some words are censored, and then the parents will tell them what the words mean anyways.

All they actually do is make it easier to see that someone's been swearing in the chat. I can guarantee that if it wasn't highlighted by the asterisks, it would just become another word on a chat that's likely spam filled in the first place.

Besides, the filter blocks words like 'sex' but not words like 'boner,' which makes absolutely no sense, because 'sex' could be used in regular conversation while 'boner' would be used in situations where the person's TRYING to not be PG. It's like your chat filter exists to make it easier for people to realize that they're being swore at BECAUSE you're trying to hide the fact you're being swore at.

Essentially... the chat filter is stupid. It's not stopping people from swearing, it won't protect virgin eyes, and it won't make the server a friendlier place. All it will do is get in the way of conversation.

And if you're worried about people spamming swear words, well, they're also spamming other things, all the time, much easier (on CTF anyways) using things like /d. Swear words won't inherently make the chat more spammy.

/rant, is the usual saying I think.

MMhmm. And having a chat filter that only blocks swear words assumes that parents would look at the chat and not be offended by literally anything else that's being said in the chat.

Hopefully soon a toggleable chat filter is added. The chat filter is really annoying right now :c

You have too much faith in gamers. If the chat filter is removed, I guarantee that for the first 12 hours 5/10 chat messages will have cussing in them.

Sure, make a toggle able filter, don't make it enforced.

5/10 messages have swears in them now, and it doesn't make a difference with or without the asterisks, that's my point.

We all know they're swearing anyways, and if you didn't know what the asterisks were blocking it would make no difference if they were or weren't blocked. All the asterisks do is make it slightly more eye-catching that someone's swearing in chat. Your mind fills in the swear anyways.

Toggleable chat filter would be sweeeeeet.

If you haven't noticed, the age of the average player is about 4 years younger on Brawl than it was on PvP.
Your mind fills in the cussing because you know what it means. 9-10 year old kids on Party don't, and I would bet that most of their parents would rather it stay that way. I know for a fact that mine would without question.

I have a love hate relationships with filters.

I find them amusing simply because it invokes rage is these little 7 year olds who think they're all that and a bag of chips because they can scream out the word f*ck in school, as well as puny keyboard warrior teenagers who seriously have never even dabbled in insults beyond that of "dude ur a f*ckn b*tch go f*k urself u sh*tty h*e". It makes it even more amusing when one of them gets called out for being an idiot, and they reply with stars.

On the flip-side, it is the bane of my existence due to the fact that all I want to do is say f*ck. Is that so hard? Apparently, yes, same reason we have laws about not being able to buy certain things, all because some dip sh*ts decided to abuse them and got someone else hurt, etc. I've had conversations with people twice my age who were open enough to drop a few F bombs because it's not like I'm gonna come out and say go f*ck a turtle, because I myself am somewhat mature.

Really, should we have a toggle filter? God yes, it would be amazing, personally I could care less if I had a son who saw the word f*ck online, but if he turned into a swearing idiot then that monitor gets a hammer in it and he gets sent to boarding school. Just let us swear, like for the love of Chin Chin it's not that taboo, you hear more curses on the radio than on T.V nowadays.
