Ocean's a lot more deeper than we could imagine. Plus water pressure builds up as you go deeper.

Space exploration isn't a waste in my opinion. From space we learn new things that may be used in the future.

    Wait, what?

So your points about space travel being a waste of time are a) money, and b) nutjobs who think the world will end?

    Uh.... ok.

So your money point is negated by the fact that we have spent more time, effort, and resources finding ways to kill eachother than we have put into space travel. If you took the amount of money the U.S. alone put into 'self defence' (trillions upon trillions of dollars, yearly) into the space travel funding and multiplied by the amount of years that have passed since the last moon landing, you'd get such a considerable sum of money (let alone manpower, study, and pure resources) that you could have likely solved world hunger, slowed or stopped cancer, and gotten manned missions to Mars in the relatively short amount of time that has passed since. So if you want to find that money, don't look at space travel, look at petty squabbles between countries that only really exist on maps.

And the conspiracy theories propagated by NASA? Really? You do realize that in nearly every case of widespread paranoia about nonexistent asteroids smashing into the Earth, the predictions were made and propogated by people who didn't care enough to look up at the bloody sky themselves, right? In nearly every case, NASA and other space explorations committes have been the people saying 'um, no, you're f**ing wrong'. Seriously.

If NASA and other space exploration groups were given the funding we use for war and were taken as seriously as the nutjobs we listen to, we'd live in a much more advanced civilization where we understood the sheer fantastic odds that were against our existance in the universe, and we'd recognize that any feuding that took place between our species would be insignificant in the extensive timescale that the entirity of everything that has ever existed takes place in. Instead, we just complain how much money NASA gets and kill eachother over liquid dinosaurs, slightly different religions, and glorified barter paper, all the while ignoring the dying and the diseased.

So never, ever say space travel is a waste of time, because without space and time we would not exist.

    Yes I'm a little miffed.

Oh, well excuse me, I didn't realize we were contradicting your religious opinion! Well excuse us, then, let's just pack up our stuff, as clearly your argument is now correct.

To paraphrase the words a fantastic writer, "the first step to finding the truth is to figure out what it is you believe, find out why it is you believe, and then trying to do everything you can to change your belief".

Human understanding was not advanced by the people who said 'I believe god did it and that's final', it was jumped forward in leaps and bounds by those who simply asked themselves 'why is it I believe what I believe?'

On that note, you do not ever get to shut down a discussion by saying 'it's my opinion, deal with it', especially if it's a discussion you started. All that happens is that you give the impression that you're sticking your fingers in your ears going 'la la la la, goddidit'.

And that gets nobody anywhere at all.

I like this quote. It recalls me of Galileo who was that astronomer during the Renaissance. He proposed something about the sun in the center of the solar system rather than the Earth which led to conflicts between religion and science. His mom was burned to a cross afterwards :/

Edit- Just looked it up, it was the earth rotating around the sun.

Hi @Samoula~ Thank you for your interesting thread.
My opinion is that it's easier to capture the public's imagination for space exploration than for example : the deep sea. In the end it's the public who pay the bills :grinning:

Humans are a virus. Once we've depleted this planet we need another one to infect or we die off. We can:
Explore the oceans and eventually die
    Or:
Explore space and destroy ANOTHER planet!

Or we can have sex with the fishies and have our offspring carry on as marine-mammals living in the depths of the ocean.
