Now before you get into "you're just trying to advertise your application", no I am not. This is an idea which I would be posting regardless if I was going for staff or not.

On the moderator application form it asks you "How active are you in-game and on what server", this gives the staff an idea of how long the player is able to put in every day and how often they can be on to moderate the servers. This is all well but I personally do not believe that simply being in-game for a 'X' amount of hours a day should count as a point on the checklist. I think that this should be combined with the helpfulness of said applicant. It is all dandy to be able to be on the servers for 3 hours every day but the goal of Jmod's and up is to keep the servers clear of hackers and rule breakers as well as helping other players. If an applicant is not helpful towards people; constantly answering questions new members have such as "how do I buy guns" or "how can I get the texturepack".

I am suggesting that if someone such as @Pikmin_Hunter has applied for staff and he meets all the requirements and the staff are thinking about accepting him, a Jmod+ or @Cuddled should spend some time watching how he interacts with the community. Does he help other players, does he put them before his score (War ect) or fighting someone in WarZ. If the player is putting his fun before the needs of the community then is that person really staff material? This can also be used to see how the person interacts with the community in general: are they well liked, are they supportive or are they the kind of person that puts others down?

I think this is actually a good idea. This section isn't the most important section, and helping other people is very important. I can't say much more about this awesome creative thread, so here is my +1.

Well sometimes when Id help cuddle accept an app she would ask me if they are helpful in game and I'd answer. So like, she wouldn't accept them right away, she would find out from mods if they were in fact helpful and right for the position.

I think you need to add in a part about people who have already been a Mod, it didn't work out, and after a journey of self exploration, where they walked the land, saved people, and learned Kung Fu, they decide to do it......again. This could be it's own thread.

For first time mods this is great insight, but we are at the point where we are recycling former Mods and I think that is a different thread than the one designed to help 1st time mods.

An aspect the @Cuddled looks at is how they left and what the player did between that time and applying for Mod again.

I know the last time I applied, and I was on the road to success, Cuddled came on, she was watching over me for a bit. Some staff somewhat do this.

    agreed.

i personally think the mod application system is bs because it's so standardised and all the apps are so homogeneous. if you look at most accepted applications you will see that they all basically say the same thing, they're all just formatted slightly differently. (shown by this thread)

as you have touched on, it doesnt particularly account for how a player actually is in game and i think that should be a key part of being a moderator. anyone can learn how to detect hacks and how to know when someone has gone too far in chat, but it takes a certain person to bond positively with the community while doing all of this and that's something the mod application system doesnt account for.

As Striker_Sly said, Cuddled usually gets on ts and talks to other moderators about how the player who is going for mod acts and how helpful that person is. We do take into consideration how active and helpful the player is.

There are currently 8 Trial Mods, out of those a single one (@BlueGuyARed) has been staff before.
Out of the 20 applicants accepted most recently only 3 have been staff on Brawl before.
As you can see, a majority of the new staff members are really new so it is very important to get to know them before judging their application and making a final decision.

As said above, before accepting an application we will make sure the applicant is active and helpful in-game by looking at his statistics on the server he is applying before and talking to Moderators and Junior Moderators who are active on the server. I also know that Cuddled tries to talk to applicants on Teamspeak before judging their application.

Following applicants on alts for hours would be extremly inefficient and we would still only know how the applicant acted in a short time frame.

Personally, I think staff applications should be hidden to other users besides staff. I 100% agree with @November, staff apps are just to generic and to standardized. I recently sent Cuddled an old thread that I hope will be implemented, that I think will improve the effectiveness of staff by a lot. However, the things described in this thread, are already being done either through Cuddled or other mods.

tl:dr I agree something needs to be changed, but we're already doing a lot for it.

I even made a staff app of something different from the generic "Professional standardized" feeling.
I got so damn tired of it and wanted to put a little more feeling into it, that didn't go so well. A little creativity wouldn't hurt in a staff application, shows a little more about the person when it comes to making something professional, that however retains a little about their personality than following the straight generic path to a 'good application'.

When accepting applicants we take multiple things into consideration. The application is for organizational purposes. Reviewing your responses gives us a gist of what you know, are capable of, etc. After the application has been reviewed we then focus on the 3 categories (forums, teamspeak, in-game). Each section is throughly checked to see if the applicant is active and helpful. I may be on a different identity on teamspeak/in-game to check. I do speak to applicants on teamspeak to see how they interact with others/generally get a feel of their personality. Background checks are also examined (players history/ip check). After all of this is done moderators from the specific server (or any moderator on) is asked what they know regarding the player applying. If the player passes the application part of the stage they are interviewed. I understand that players may think that applications are to similar, do to this feedback, we will see if we can find a better solution.
