Slither Critique

    The new minigame "Sltiher" Just came out, and here is some early reveiw

    1. The mode is SO laggy, I can barely walk at a half decent pace.
    2. The cows are far apart, making it hard to see a large trail
    3. Map is way to small for a 5k+ snake
    4. The fire animation is.. well distracting
    5. Your FOV is VERY VERY small when you get large.
    6. One of the most important things on this list, is hit detection. As Roke knows, I circled him (Probably the first on the server) And then he glitched through me. I was sad ;(
    7. No turning circle when you are large

    Anyway, that was some critique on the new gamemode. I have a feeling it won't stick around though :/

    1. We just fixed most of the major lag issues.
    2. They are pretty close imo
    3. We'll work on making the map bigger, I agree.
    4. Fire animation means the player is boosting. What do you mean by distracting? There needs to be a visual indicator to tell when a player is boosting, we felt this was best.

    6. Probably a lag issue. Let me know if this continues.
    7. Unfortunately we cannot prevent players from turning sharply when large. At least, not without making it glitchy.

    I believe he means the lack of being able to see your snakes whole body when you get larger. It's harder to strategies when you can't see where your body is moving compared to other players

    I mean that when there is someone 3k~ on the server, and they boost, all hell breaks loose.

    I increased the mass per sheep from 50 to 100. Now you need to collect 100 mass to gain 1 sheep. So far, sizes have been good and so has the lag. Let me know what you think.

    5. As you get slowness, your FOV increases, so in slither, the bigger you get the more FOV, I have a solution to this, but I'll just leave it be considering the devs know what they're doing :V.

    6. I know the developers configured the hitboxes, but I think by chance, a snake can somehow be fast enough to go through the custom hitboxes, not sure though. Just multiply the radius by like 1.25, or make it fit the sheep even more.

    LAG REDUCTION IDEAS:

    Client-Side

    There's lag both on server and on player, here are some ideas to make the lag less on the player.

    - Decreasing Server View Distance: On the real slither, you can't even see that far anyways, just make the view distance 2 or something, keeps the adrenaline flowing because snakes could pop up from nowhere, but you still have at least 3 seconds to react just like in the real version.

    - Hiding Players: This is not only a lag-reduction idea, but cosmetic idea as well. Just completely remove players (by that I mean hiding them whenever they're controlling the snake), it's distracting anyways to see them. It would also add a whole new cosmetic section, just make a Hologram above the sheep, and donors can choose colors, smileys, and different titles. Holograms are more efficient than players in terms of lag/packets as well.

    Server-Side:
    This will help as well :wink:.

    - Merge Servers: There's 3 servers, one server has 20, and the other have just a few, it's a waste of space. Merging both of them together would be very nice. You might say "But what if people like doing 1v1s or just hanging around?", well whenever you merge servers it will be more cramped, that's why you can just make the border wider to make room for more players.

    GENERAL IDEAS:

    - Removing Compass: Before you think of anything, I'm not supposing we just remove it and be done. We should replace it with a MAP, compasses are pretty hard to find any information, if the map gets bigger, a custom map would be a good choice.

    We already did this, seems to be good now (8 -> 6)
    Chap actually said he already wanted this, he said he wanted the "head sheep" to have a hologram of the name of the player.
    This won't exactly help with lag. The reason we opened 3 was because on first release we had too many people online, so Putty made more. Since then, the server has died down, so we will probably remove the other 2 soon.

    I guess we could always add a delay before actually updating the players pitch to accomplish this. Didn't really think it would work out well though. Guess I was wrong :v
