how do you make a server?

Well first of all, if your serious about a server, use Linux. Ubuntu Server is the best. I use it for CSGO, MC, TS3 and lots more. In terms of bukkit, I don't know much, but if you want help with Vanilla I sure can.

If you've never made a server before, do it in Vanilla to get the hang of it, then with that experience you could follow the tutorials closer with a better understanding and you should have no problem.

 

Just watch some tutorials.... and do not homehost.

Post a thread in the spigot forums hosting advice section. The spigot community is helpful. Just be avare that a guy called VentureForo is not to be trusted. Ventureforo do have some alts, so do not trust anyone whos name starts with something like venture.

Making a server first requires a server host. I'd research hosts because I've met people with horrible hosts and people with good hosts.

Next, you need to pay for the server every month and there will be multiple types of space you can buy. If it's just for you and your friends you'd do fine with the cheapest but if you want a server for 20 or so people, I'd suggest buying the one that says 20 slots allowed. Hosting sites will tell you what tier is what and how many players are recommended to have smooth gameplay.

Bukkit should be with every server host I believe. This isn't a big issue.

The next thing you need to do is check out plugins on the bukkit website. You can search up what type of plugins you would like and instal them into your console. The console can be found on the site you are currently hosting your server from.

Not all plugins are ready to go and you need to learn how to configure the files the way you want them. I'd suggest reading up tutorials and wikis on the plugins you need to configure.
***Essentials is a plugin that I'd suggest getting right away. This plugin is very useful and includes /warp and /spawn commands***
Every time you configure files for your server or add plugins you must restart it and there should be a button inside the console that says either restart/stop/start. Restart restarts the server, stop stops it, and start brings it back up.


Keep in mind to make sure you don't download every plugin to your console. This can cause your server to lag because plugins take up memory.
