    Hey guys,

Recently we've all seen the new servers popping up that make their own little versions of "classic" HG (side note about any "classic" HG server/suggestion: define classic. 2011? 2012? 2013? The amount of servers trying to be "classic" makes it so current and new that you can't use that word to define the gamemode) and what all of these servers are basically composed of: is our HG, only more media support and a lot less depth. When they come out of beta or are in beta, they have anywhere from 20 to 60 kits, whereas we are hovering at a little above 120 purchasable kits (through XP) at the moment, which does make it harder for new players to learn about the game - but it also means we are the "full" HG. As far as a Minecraft gamemode goes, HG could never be worked on again and I think it would still be a complete gamemode, and many would say that HG has had to much development over the past 5+ years.

With all of these new servers, that I call "wanna-be's"; because they are trying to accomplish what our gamemode did 3 years ago. I have been thinking about the direction I think our HG should go. What I posted here is the direction in which I saw HG headed on MCPVP (minus the kit reductions), but today I'd like to propose a direction that no "wanna-be" server has really ever done.

What gamemode was really competitive with HG during it's time of greatness, and has slowly but surely absorbed the player-base and community? If you guessed Survival Games, you are right on the money. SG, Skywars, the new breed of fast-paced and yes, fun gamemodes. The only popular Minecraft gamemode that has ever gotten close to the possible length of an HG is UHC, and that is no where near as complicated to understand. For example, if you were going to define HG and UHC in one sentence, this is what you would get:

The Hardcore Games is a tournament where players battle to be the last man standing.
An ultra hardcore tournament is a tournament where players battle to to be the last man standing.

The same, right? But the next sentence about HG you would want to mention kits, soup, the feast, towers, traps, etc. For UHC all you would have to say is "you can not regenerate health" and if I was really trying I could get this into the one sentence no problem.

So the direction I am proposing for HG is to make it quicker. Quicker than it is already. We should've done something about this earlier, but when we only have 40 player games MAX and we have 120 kits, it's obviously stupid to have that many available. There is no way every kit will ever get used in one HG game. So first thing first is do one of the two options mentioned in the thread above (leaning towards completely removing about 100 kits, the poll was very close). This would be the first step to providing a balance to a quick HG game.

The second thing I am proposing, is shrinking the border. By half. If games are going to be quicker we need to shorten the distances someone has to run.

The third and most important thing I am suggesting is changing the meta of HG. The "default" way any HG server runs goes something like this:

1: People join your server. They have x amount of time to explore the map using /spawn and running around. Some servers have a kitpvp system like we have that people can also do in the meantime.
2: At 15 seconds or so people are all teleported to about the center of the map.
    3: Game begins.

This is how I envision HG running in this new direction:

    1. Users join the server, in creative. They can fly around the map and search for what they are trying to find i.e. Swamps
    2. When the game begins they are teleported around the map with distance [dependant on how many people are in the game] between every player. The player has 1 minute of invincibility.
    3. The same.

I'd like to talk about something before I go into any further depth of this direction. The problem Brawl faces and the reason I suggest all of this in the first place, which I only partly explained above. Unfortunately when the merge occurred, HG had a very low amount of upper-staff members and experienced/knowledgeable people who could make the right choices for the gamemode (or rather they didn't have the permissions to do so), and while our HG will always be the original, the people who previously ran our HG all went to do other things, and many of the knowledgeable player-base opened up their own versions of HG. Which is why it is difficult for us to be the main HG server in our community, especially with all of the new wanna-be's popping up. This summer our "old" player base have started to regenerate, but I don't know how long that will last, which is why I suggest this. To many of the people looking for a classic HG server aren't interested in our fully developed one, and with 3 dozen other servers striving to be what this gamemode has already accomplished I don't see us being a competitive force, or rather a need to be competitive. I think that since at the current moment every other HG server is trying to be like what we are in everything besides player-counts and the amount of kits we have; it gives us the freedom to do a version of HG that is something new, never seen.

What makes me angry about this, is we have ALL of the things these servers have, and a lot more. Think about it.

What all of the current HG servers have

    • A fairly balanced selection of kits (as balanced as one could say)
    • Scoreboard
    • Cool sound effects
    • Aesthetically pleasing additions i.e. kit cooldowns
    • Decent staff
    • Soup
    • Increased number of swamps/mushrooms (custom terrain control)
It would be difficult to find something that our HG lacks compared to these other servers, besides player counts and media support.

So... tell me what you think, if you are an old player who absolutely loves what we've done so far with the gamemode, tell us. If you are someone who is tired of the same old features coded into every single copy-cat server and our server, tell us.

When HG goes back into development we certainly have the option to make our server just like everyone else's; this is to help us decide if we should really do that.

Not a HG player by any means, but what about custom biomes or custom maps? They would probably be harder to make, but custom maps are generally more interesting.

I'll be supportive here and give feedback on the thread.

I like the idea of cutting the border size down because games can run for a very long time right now.

However, I don't like the idea of having people all spawn in different spots. Its unfair if someone magically spawns in a swamp while another gets thrown into a desert. Other than that, I think creating a shortened version of the game could prove helpful to your cause.

The media team is currently focusing on reviving the MCPVP channel. If these changes take place, the media team should be putting together a trailer for the new HG

    Oh my god.
You really are on the way to HG revival.
The only thing I disagree with is the spawn thing.
I love running to the swamp with everyone else, grabbing someone's mushies, and crafting as fast as possible. It really gets me into the mood for a nice HG game.

I don't think half the arena, maybe 1/4. Because then it's a 500 x 500 and that's nothing. Maybe 750 x 750. 500 x 500 PLUS the minimizing of the arena after time makes it super small. I like the idea of shrinking the arena though.

I agree with @Uraniumyyy though. This would give players more of an advantage to grab mushies and get ready while others have to run around. I don't see this to be such a big problem, as there is a kit called hermit.

    Instead of creative, /spawn?

There's no point in having creative if there's /spawn and no point in /spawn if there's creative

tl;dr below, you lazy pile of HG players

The only direction HG will take from any change that doesn't transform it into another gamemode altogether is downward.

All factors work against it. You have the fact that attention spans are decreasing, so the complex and lengthy HG matches will make players lose interest quickly. You have the fact that SoupPvP now has somewhat of a negative connotation now (Gapp and PotPvP seem to have the spotlight now, ffs) from the "s00p3r 1337 m4dli0n pee vee pee big boiiz". You have the fact that some of the old McPvP players outright hate Brawl and refuse to play it just because Brawl hosts HG.

What else doesn't work in HG's favor?

A lot of people say that the EULA killed HG, and they're right, but what people seem to gloss over a lot of the time is that HG was already on a decline, starting from what I think would be mid 2014. It was still possible to get 120 players per game, yes, but it was happening with less and less frequency. Things were still going strong, yes, but not as strong as HG once was.

Cut to February, 2015. I had trouble finding a game that had more than 50 people on at 3 PM CST on a Saturday.

And finally, it might be worth mentioning that in HG's prime, 2012, 2013, maybe 2011? not sure, PvP wasn't something we were unbelievably familiar with. PvP servers weren't as common.

Well now? HG has a large sea of competitors that overall do a better job at providing the kind of PvP the mainstream Minecraft seems to want.

    So..to summarize (tl;dr I mentioned earlier):
    - Attention span is decreasing, players want short term gratification and SG+SW+minigame servers are all too happy to deliver, while HG matches just keep dragging on and on
    - SoupPvP, one of the key things that makes Hunger Games Hunger Games, generally having a negative or neutral connotation. Certainly not anything good amongst all of the PotPvP fanatics that seem to make up the PvP mainstream.
    - Outright contempt for Brawl by some McPvP veterans
    - The somewhat suppressed fact that HG was already on a decline, it's just that EULA shoved the stick up the rear end, so to speak
    - Competitors have taken over and I see no reason for HG to somehow make a comeback when the playerbase just doesn't want HG PvP anymore

My fingers are sore because this keyboard has some gr8 pressure needed to press a key, but hopefully I've made my point.

I hope this reply is taken into consideration because honestly....this whole "revive HG" thing has gone on far too long.

    It's dead.

The problem with HG is that it is just punishing for new players. HG seems very interesting on the surface, with its kits, feast, and soup. A new player will probably play a few games just to see what kind of game this is, but after getting slaughtered by pros over and over again, potential players tend to get frustrated and quit before fully learning about the game. HG just needs something to make the game fun for these players while they learn how to soup and such.

Can you please stop being so damned negative and actually play the game?
I get 45-60 player games sometimes.
Simple has just as many players. I really don't get your problem. If you don't like current HG on Brawl, get out.

So would you like to suggest how to change this? Did you take the time to read through the suggestions, or at least my first reply? I think the "lazy part" applies to you.

Basically everything that I pointed out aren't things you can change, at least in a reasonable time frame.

How do you change the fact that attention spans are decreasing? I can't suggest a solution for that, nor can I suggest a possible way to make people start liking SoupPvP more. I mean, we already have YouTubers on that job that are advertising new HG reboots/Brawl HG. I can't change that some McPvP old timers just hate Brawl because Brawl.

I can't change that pretty much nothing was done with HG within the year that it was bought, so that the players eventually and slowly dripped away. Because that already happened.

I can't really change that competitors are building up quickly, short of going on there and spamming Brawl's IP, which I'm sure no one would appreciate.

My reply wasn't a suggestion to fix HG. It was to let it go or change it into a new gamemode, a new gamemode the current group of Minecraft players would appreciate.

So I can't really make suggestions on anything, because...well...

POKEMON GO HAS PEOPLE OUTSIDE INSTEAD OF AT THEIR COMPUTERS BRO

No, but in all seriousness, HG is done for the reasons I made in that lengthy reply.

And yes, I read your reply with the suggestion to merge SG and HG. I wonder how many McPvP veterans and SG fanatics you pissed off with that one.

As for playing the game...nothing in my reply says anything that really needs any experience playing the game. I don't make any specific claims pertaining to gameplay like "oh my god, endermage is glitchy", and cite those as the reason HG is currently not doing too well. If I were to make such a scandalous claim, I would back it up so that I wouldn't be immediately hit offline.

"I get 45-60 player games sometimes."

This can be compared to someone saying "I max out at 150 pounds, do you even lift bro?". Okay, you can max out at 150, but for all I know, you've done exactly one rep at 150. And just did it for the bragging rights.

I'm glad to hear that you are fortunate enough to get 45 players in your game, let alone 60, really, I am. But in the games that I've played since 1 year after Brawl bought HG, my max has been 27 or 26 (somewhere in that range) while my average game has 13-17 people in there.
Maximum numbers really don't mean much. The average and maybe the mode is the real deal.

"Simple has just as many players."
I don't give a flying corndog in my rear end how many players Simple has.

And actually, it's worth noting that Brawl had a lot of crucial things that SimpleHG doesn't, like the original Hunger Games domain, the McPvP YouTube channel (fat lot of good this thing did Brawl), and a heck of a lot more time than SimpleHG, yet SimpleHG seems to be equal with Brawl. Without all of that good stuff.

" If you don't like current HG on Brawl, get out."

You and many other players seem to think that just because someone criticizes something, it means that they don't like it.

My parents discipline me when I'm out of line, it doesn't mean they don't love me. Other parents may discipline their child, it might mean they don't love their children. It depends on the case. But you can't say that all people that criticize don't like the game, and that all people that don't criticize like it.

In this case...I love HG. Playing it is such a refresher compared to the other gamemodes that just felt like "open a chest and if you get lucky you'll get a sword you can use to kill people. if not you're screwed". Not saying that HG was really balanced, because it wasn't, but at the very least soup and a sword were guaranteed. Short of an urgal showing up, everyone had the same chances in a fight, and if there wasn't a fair fight, it was because your opponent spent time getting armor, or had a kit that gave them the advantage.

What I was primarily pushing for in my reply was for HG to either be changed to another gamemode or for it to be discontinued. And since we all know the latter is never going to happen, I suppose my suggestion would be for people to stop hoping that it'll return to the mainstream server it once was. It's not going to.

You can say what you will about it. I'd be happy to debate out the points I made in my reply. But telling me not to be negative, then telling me to screw off if I don't like it, well...

I suppose we can argue about that, since I've already listed my arguments about those points you made. But that'd hardly be constructive, and it goes without saying off-topic.

You could suggest a way to completely change HG, while still revolving around the idea of SoupPvP
