Welcome to Mafia Reborn, the game of lies, logic, and deceit. Mafia has been hosted on Skype for a long time, and the Mafia Reborn seasons began several months ago. The following thread will offer an in-depth insight into the game. The main messaging platform used to host Mafia games is Skype, although occasional unofficial seasons may be hosted via Discord.

    About Mafia:
Mafia is a game of logic, deception, and group discussion. In every game of Mafia there are three teams: Town, Mafia, and 3rd Party (or 3P). The largest team in the game will always be Town followed by Mafia and then a scattering of 3P.

(For example, in a game of 20 players there may be around four Mafia, two 3rd Party, and the rest (14) would be Town.)

Town wins the game by killing off every Mafia player and usually most 3rd Party players as well. Town does this by getting together during the Day Phase of the game (which typically lasts a maximum of 24 hours but can end early) and discussing any leads or ideas they may have. In this discussion (and by using their unique individual roles) the Town players have to figure out which of their friends are secretly Mafia in disguise and lynch them. Some Town roles may have the ability to kill players outside of lynching.

Unlike Town and 3rd Party, Mafia members will all be added to a second private chat together where they can all see and talk to each other in secret. Mafia wins the game by by killing off every Town member and usually 3rd Party players as well. Mafia has to work together to trick all of their friends into thinking they are Town by creating fake roles to claim and pretending they are searching for hidden Mafia. Mafia’s main kill happens at night but sometimes they can have bonus kills due to unique roles.

3rd Party players win in ways unique to their role. Some may win with town, some may win with Mafia, and some may win on their own. Typically a 3rd Party player should try to blend in with Town but depending on their role they can usually side with either Mafia or Town. It’s usually safer to side with Town.

Phases are essential in this game. There are two phases that both last a maximum of 24 hours. There is a day phase and a night phase.

At the beginning of the day phase, the host will announce any deaths or possible messages from the previous night. The players will then discuss any information that they want to share in order to find the players on opposing teams. If they think someone is on an opposing team, they may vote for them. Once enough votes have been reached, the player will be lynched. Also, if day has lasted 24 hours, the player with the most votes will be lynched. After the player is removed from the chat, the night phase will begin.

The game begins during the night phase. During the night phase, you are not allowed to talk about the game, unless you are Mafia and talk in the Mafia chat. If you have an action, you want to submit it as soon as possible. The night phase will end either once all actions have been sent in, or 24 hours has been reached.

Voting is an important part of the day phase. During the day, you can vote someone who you believe is Mafia, or if you are Mafia, you can vote a Town member to try to trick the town. To vote, you have to PM the host with the player that you would like to vote. You may tell the players who you are voting for and why you decided to do so, but sending your vote to the host will be the only way that it will be counted. To decide on how many votes are needed to lynch someone, we use the formula y=(x/2)+1. In this equation, y is the number of players that are needed to lynch and x is the number of players that are alive in the game. If the number of votes needed in order to lynch someone is not met within the 24 hour time period, the player with the most votes will be lynched. If there is a tie between votes, we will RNG those two players and the player that is picked will die.

Common winning situations are how the game ends. The first winning situation is if all Town members have killed any players whose role does not win along with the town (this mostly consists of Mafia and 3rd party). The second winning situation is if the amount of Mafia players are equal to the amount of Town players. The Mafia will not be able to be lynched in this situation, so then they would win.

    Rules:

    Head Staff: Shan.
Staff: Hotintexas, Lugia_, Mh676, Miskey, xAsh, Xelia_.

    • Do not suicide or leave a season mid-game.
      • Exceptions may be made with justified reasons.
    • Do not game throw by going against your win condition.
      • An example of this is purposely killing a confirmed Town member with your day/night action when you are Town aligned. Revealing other Mafia members to the town when you are Mafia aligned without reason is also considered game throwing (although in certain cases voting for fellow Mafia members in order to win is allowed).
    • Remain active in the game, and try to enter your night actions in a timely manner.
      • Not entering your action for 2 nights in a row will lead to you being host-killed.
    • Do not share information from the current Mafia game outside of the main chat or the Mafia chat.
      • This includes direct PMs, other messaging platforms, IRL, etc.
    • Do not use screenshots or quote directly from PMs with the host
      • Even when claiming a role, do not quote or use timestamps.
      • You may, however, quote host messages that were said in the main Mafia chat itself.
      • Quoting a host message from PM will result in a host-kill.
    • Please do not take personal grudges or fights into the game. Do not target anyone just because you don’t like them.

At staff discretion, breaking any of the rules listed above above may lead to:
    • Being removed from the current game (a host may also choose to host-kill a player from their current season - or future seasons they host - with valid reasoning).
    • Suspensions from the next season, or multiple future seasons.
    • A permanent ban from all future Mafia games.

    FAQ:

Q: How does a host decide who gets what role?
A: The roles are made completely random through the use of a random number generator (RNG). The RNG is used to eliminate favoritism and make sure everyone has a fair chance at playing each role.

Q: How does the flow of the game work?
A: There are two alternating phases, night and day. The game starts on the night phase, also called N0 (or Night Zero). During night you send in your night actions to the host, if applicable. Once all night actions are sent in or once a full 24 hours has occurred, it switches to the day phase, or D1 (Day One). During day you vote for a lynching and are allowed to use any day actions. Once someone obtains enough votes to be lynched, or a full 24 hours occurs, the person with the most votes is killed, and it reverts to night phase, or N1 (Night One). This progresses until one side meets their win condition. To recap, it goes from N0, D1, N1, D2, N2, D3, N3, and on until one side wins.

Q: I’ve never played any games like this before, am I still allowed to play?
A: Of course. Before you play, it is strongly recommended you read the rules thoroughly before joining a season, but besides that feel free to jump in and learn through doing. If you have any questions please ask the hosts, as they’re there to enhance the games experience.

Q: How long do seasons normally last?
A: Depending on the amount of players seasons normally span from a few days to 1-2 weeks, with 1-3 days in between each season to give the hosts ample time to prepare.

Q: I caught someone breaking the rules, what should I do?
A: If you witness someone breaking the rules please notify the host of the game as soon as possible, and they will deal with it with discretion, and also pass it on to a staff member.

Q: I’d like to host a future season. What can I do if I would like to host?
A: After playing a few games to get the gist of the game, you can ask a Mafia Staff member to be added to the line up to host a game. If they accept your request, you will be assigned a staff member to Co-host with you who will provide assistance as needed to ensure the season goes smoothly.

Q: I live in a timezone that isn’t as popular. Am I still allowed to play?
A: Absolutely, The day/night phases often run on a 24 hour clock, so no matter what region/timezone you live in you’ll still have a chance to submit a vote/action and talk to the other players.

Q: This is my very first game and I am very overwhelmed with people making accusations and using logical claims to figure out the game. What should I do?
A: The best way to get to know the game is to step in and just starting doing it. Although the host cannot give away any information about other players, you can always always always ask them for anything, including advice on how to share information or ideas. You can also ask questions to your fellow players, everyone playing used to be new to the game and understands what you’re going through. Players will always be open to any input, so don’t shy away from talking in chat, especially if you have something good to share! Once you play a game or two you’ll get the hang of the game and understand the nuances, it’s just a matter of doing it.

This version of Mafia is very similar to other games like Town of Salem and Epic Mafia, so if you have played one of those then you will most likely enjoy this!

Currently, Mafia is run on Skype. We are aware that many people are switching over to Discord, so we are hosting an unofficial season to test things out. If we gather enough players that are interested in playing there, we will have games on both Skype and Discord.

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment or message me. If you wish to play, please comment or send me your Skype and I will add you to the next season prior to it starting.

It's very similar in its playstyle, although it's more detailed and the games last longer.
