As the title says, the focus of this thread is tiered gear and the level-up system. When I posted the gameplan thread, a few people didn't like the idea of tiers. Now, I still don't really know why this is, so that's the reason I'm posting this thread. Nobody seemed to really take issue with the idea of a level-up system. However, since tiers and this system are so inseparably linked, I've decided to include it in the discussion.

Just to recap, here is the description of tiered gear and level-ups as described in the gameplan thread.

    Gameplan ideas:

Armor: Leather, gold, and iron buyable. Diamond is vote crate exclusive.

    Guns:
There will be no legal or illegal guns. Instead, there will be 12 guns in all. 4 tiers of pistols, shotguns, and rifles. Tier 4 guns are vote crate exclusive.

    Ranks
: 15(?) ranks progressed through using reputation. Unlocks buyable armor and weapons from the guilds' stores. (Hypothetical example: At level 5 you can only buy full leather and the tier 1 guns. You can still use higher tier guns and armor if you loot them off another player/another player gives them to you.) Other things can be unlocked as well like buyable personal houses.

    Randie's New Ideas:
    • I'll be honest, this is what I most like about the potential new update. I've thought long and hard about both of these things, and I can't think of anything better. There's only so much one person can do, and it's hard to think outside the box and free myself from my personal biases. I recognize that. That's what you guys are for though, right? :v Help perfect these concepts!
Thinking about and answering some of these questions would be helpful. What do you like/dislike about the idea of tiers? Is there a better system that you can think of that would provide the retention/reason to keep playing that the level-up system would potentially provide?

Provides incentive to keep playing the game, while encouraging PvP, and at the same time preventing everyone from running around in the best gear. Nice job.

Tiers, yes, they would be good. It'll actually give a goal for people to play in the game. In Wild West currently there is no 'goal', you just need to do illegal/legal stuff and get money and fight. Tiers would be great.

I feel like if you're a solo, and don't really have any friends, leveling up those first 5 levels would be really hard. Maybe making tier 1 guns and armor available at the starting point would be better.

I think teams should have a down-side so there is actually something worth it going solo...

In my personal opinion, tiered guns will just make Wild West WarZ. But hey, that's just what I think.

But he's actually doing something to balance the server out instead of criticizing other people's ideas and opinions, so there's that.

No tiered guns please. Too much WarZ. How about just having some guns be better than others like rn. I don't really like the idea of leveling up to buy guns :V But then again you could just kill for the higher tier guns.

THATS WHAT THE TIERS ARE DESIGNED FOR.
Prevents everyone from running around with the best gear on the first day, and encourages progression.
Encourages PvP to get better gear without having to wait to buy it.

Someone teaming does not mean they can't have an opinion against big teams dominating Wild West so much. Just like how if a sheriff abused against you, no-one with decency would complain saying you should be supporting this.

Why would Titan constantly be suggesting ideas that go against big teams if he wouldn't want a change nerfing big teams? Use your brain for once.

Nonetheless, since I can't be asked to get a warning point for off topic posts:
This seems rather new player unfriendly. If I'm lucky enough to get a lot of money from a drug run as a new player, I wouldn't want to then have to get good at the game and level up a bunch before I can actually buy anything decent.

Why aren't you diggin' it m8?
I already plan on making the first 5 levels much easier to progress through than the other levels. I want that capture the excitement of progression at the very beginning. Don't worry though, there will be some things available at the beginning as well.
We already have a bit of a tier system in the current wildwest, right? Legal are tier 1 and illegal are tier 2. What is it that will turn it into WarZ? Is it just the fact that it uses the term "Tiers" for organization like WarZ?
I'll definitely think about this. I like the idea of this.
Isn't that just Tiers by another name though?
Yeah, unfortunately retention and noob friendliness do conflict here. I think that the system will bring more good from retention than it will bring bad for noobs. Again, the early levels will be easier to progress through. New players can still buy from higher level players who have these items, and hopefully they won't need anything too decent to succeed as there should be more players who are walking around in gear their level with this system. But yeah, I do recognize what you're saying.

Make experience based on certain weapon, e.g. when you keep using pistol tier I, you'll gain experience on this gun. More experience when you shoot a player with higher level. More experience on the gun, less time to reload. Don't make more damage along with experience, it'll crush newbies. Reload time is enough to take a slight advantage in equal fight. Also, experience on the gun will unlock buying the next tier of the gun if the current tier is already unlocked.

Experience on armor should be gained similarly, but each part of armor will soften different kind of damage (and experience will be gained accordlingly):
    • helmet - headshots,
    • chestplate - normal shot,
    • leggings - melee and fire,
    • boots - fall.
Don't forget tiered bows (more chance to daze an opponent? less time to reload?) and melee weapon (more chance to parry an attack? maybe a shot?).

Horse will gain its own experience while running. Trained horses will jump higher and run faster. A player will gain experience for riding which will allow to train horses faster in case the current one dies as well as buy better tier horses.

The player may steal someone's horse, but needs time to successfully steal a horse. More stealing, more experience, less time to steal.

Similarly stealing other players from behind (but for a single item).

Also, experience for sneaking, repairs, robbing, chopping trees, consuming drug/alcohol.

    Thoughts?

I've considered and suggested implementing a sixth town that only grants the newer players access (rank 1-5?). That way, they'll be able to acquaint themselves with the gamemode without being in the same pool as the best players. It's kind of like Frisco pre-Eula, but for newer players instead of donators.

The current planned system will give you access to better gear, rather than abilities. We're probably going to be keeping the /skills system and there are some really neat ideas out there. I'm a little against altering gear however, as it kind of screws over the PvP system and doesn't really favor newer players. Remember, we're trying to focus on retaining these players this map.
Not really supporting the "newbie friendly" aspect we're trying to achieve :n. I believe that the current system is working fine. You shouldn't have to worry about going afk to come back and realize that someone nicked all of your belongings.

But then again that's just me
