This is the first chapter in what I hope will become many. It follows the life of a Raid player, Melvin, who gets cast into the world of Raid and slowly learns and discovers how to live and survive - Enjoy.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

His vision was the first to go, and blackness creeping in from the edges before it had engulfed the very centre of his sight. The ringing followed - his ears seemed blind to the noise, as if only his body was feeling it, or was it the source of it? The strange sensation had begun as a tremor, starting at the head, then rippling down, but as the seconds passed, it grew. He felt his strength fading, as if it were fuelling the ringing that was getting rapidly faster and louder. He blinked, feeling his eyelids close around the blackness, only to find it returned when they were opened again.

The ringing ceased. He blinked again, this time rewarded with a blinding light; slowly fading to reveal an array of colour. A large S predominantly filled his vision, hovering in the sky. Looking around, he made out palm trees, their leaves swaying in the wind. The sun was just rising, its rays casting long shadows on the trees, and on the opposite side he could make out the last slivers of the moon as it passed behind the horizon. A flurry of people were scattered around him, some appeared to be exchanging items, others carrying swords and wearing heavy looking armour. Gazing around, he began to loose himself in the feel of the place, the wind, the trees… it all felt familiar, like he as at home here, yet it was all new to him. A rumbling snapped him from his thoughts, he bent his knees slightly to lower his centre of balance, scanning around for the source of the tremor. No one else seemed to have noticed, or were ignoring it, they carried running around like nothing had happened. Puzzled, and raising back up to his full height, Melvin walked towards the S, down some steps, then down another flight to his left. The rumbling came again, this time accompanied with a pain in his stomach.

With the source of the rumbling now apparent, he looked around for any sign of a food source. Spotting a few cows in the distance he headed in their direction, only managing to take 10 steps before his run faltered to a walk. Glimpsing a ripple in front of him, he stopped, watching what lay in front of him. It was like a barrier, stretching up into the sky, yet almost invisible, aside from the small infrequent shimmers where the sun light caught it. He reached forward to it, feeling a chill on his hand as it neared. He pulled back his hand, fearful as to what would happen had he touched it. Instead, he walked along side it, careful not to stray too close. He hadn’t managed to walk far before he felt a chill near his face, he reeled back, seeking the tell-tale shimmer of this invisible wall. It took a while before he saw a brief glint of light, confirming that the wall came to a corner. He turned to walk along the second edge of the wall, and smiled to himself as he saw a pig emerge from a tunnel near the steps. He ran over, his legs now fuelled with the thought of food which didn't involve the need to touch that mysterious wall.

By the time he neared the tunnel, the pig had turned and walked back in, disappearing from view. Reaching it, he saw that the tunnel actually went downwards to an area of grass; water flowing down the stone walls into pools. He wasn’t the only one there, many other people were congregating around the centre, where he could make out small sparks of fire emerging from under a thin piece of what looked like carpet. He glanced around, searching for the pig, but soon guessed that it had already met its fait when he saw that a few of the people were happily munching on pork chops.

Quite without warning, the centre where the sparks were coming from suddenly flared and a pig appeared… from nowhere. He would have been puzzled but his stomach wasn’t going to allow him to waste time thinking about it, and he began walking up to the pig. A twang sounded from behind him, and he felt a whistled in his ear accompanied with a rush of air along his cheek. An arrow thudded into the side of the pig. The pig made no sound, just blinked, before promptly falling over. A twinge pity ran through his body, but was short lived; he turned to look at where the arrow had come from. A man, dressed in slightly grey looking armour was walking in his direction. A bow slung across his right shoulder, swapped with a sparkling blue sword which now occupied his hand. He realised that he was now standing between the man and his kill, and in an instinctive moment, he snapped back towards the dead pig, and lunged for it, grabbing some of the meat before changing his balance, ready to run away.

The man’s eyes glared at him, his body blocking the only escape route. He would have tried to reason with the man but he could see there was little hope in that. The sword raised and, as with most people when confronted with the face of death; his life flashed before his eyes, but considering he’d only experienced 5 minutes so far, it was over rather fast. The sword dropped, like a hammer thundering towards his head, but a split second before it made contact, it randomly rebounded. He had felt nothing, no pain, no shudder of it hitting him - nothing. Again, the man raised the sword, this time swinging for his side, just below the rib cage. Still nothing. It was as if the sword was making contact with a protective aura around him. Melvin allowed the man to make several more attempts to hit him before he was satisfied that he was safe, for reasons he didn’t understand. He realised that he was still clutching the hunk of meat he had taken from the pig, and clambering onto a wall next to one of the four waterfalls he sat down. He took a bite of meat, ignoring the fact it was raw; frankly he couldn’t have cared, he was just happy to be eating something. As he ate, the thought of wall filled his thoughts. Where did the invisible wall go? And more importantly, what was it there for? Between mouthfuls of pork, he twisted his head and poked his mouth into the water fall, slurping at the water. It was cold, almost too cold to drink, with a slightly earthy taste to it, but it quenched his thirst.

He finished, cleaning the bones of any remaining morsels of meat, and tucking one in his belt for safe keeping. Turning round, and getting to his feet he was surprised to see the man behind him, still hopelessly jabbing at him with his sword. Melvin chuckled to himself, and walked past the man, up the two flights of steps to the place where it had all started. Looking around, he could see 3 more letters in the sky, and realising that they must mark the directions. Looking around more closely, every direction was the same, except for the different letters. Did this mean the invisible wall was on all four sides too? A quick run to the West side confirmed he was right - the same almost invisible wall, the same chilling feeling. Which meant he was in a box, where the only escape was through the wall. Melvin remembered the bone in his belt, and pulled it out. He flipped it in his hands a few times before tossing it, towards the wall. Nothing. It passed through as if there was no wall there at all, landing with a small 'click click' as it hit the ground on the other side. Like before, Melvin raised his hand towards it, felt the now familiar chill...

    And stepped through.

@_featherpaw_ - While my writing may never match your skill, I hope I managed to write something that you enjoy.

P.S. If you don't get what the invisible wall is - Its the barrier between being in spawn and leaving spawn and loosing spawn protection.

    No no no no....
Crafting recipes are completely Vanilla (normal basically, there are no custom crafting recipes - Except soup) - Anything you don't know, Google does. Now you have no excuse not to play Raid :grinning:

Only crafting recipes that are different from vanilla minecraft is the recipe to craft mushroom soups. These can be made the traditional way with a bowl + red and brown mushroom, but you can also make them with a bowl and cacti or a bowl with melons, a bowl with cocoa beans, a bowl with carrots, or even a bowl with potatoes.
