Chapter 9: /Defend

Jessica was home, on Senior Ditch Day, chatting with her friends when she heard her mom frantically yelling for her. She quickly signed off and bolted down the stairs.

Her mom was in a state of panic. Her eye was black, her shirt ripped, and bloody. She had a panicked look on her face. Jessica asked her to explain what happened. Her mom began telling her that she was at the store when all the cell phones began ringing at the same time. Jessica’s mom was a night nurse, single mom, and usually did her grocery shopping after her shift.

Her phone was dead when everyone’s cell began to ring.

Her voice tense with fear.

She saw a number of people answer their phones…then she watched them fall to the ground in pain. A couple of minutes later they got up and started killing other people.

She sobbed as she told Jessica the story.

Fear in her eyes.

Jessica was truly terrified. She had never seen her mom afraid before. Her mom ran upstairs, with Jessica in hot pursuit. She had her key’s in hand and she headed to the locker in her parents closet. Fumbling with the keys, she managed to find the right one and open up her dad’s locker where he kept his pistol.

Jessica’s mom grabbed the pistol and all the clips. Jessica’s dad, a soldier in the US Army had shown everyone in the family how to use the pistol for basic home defense while he was on tour in Iraq.

Jessica’s mom looked her in the eyes and said we have to pick up Riley, her five year old brother. Jessica followed her mom as they scrambled into the garage. Jessica’s mom asked her to get in the car before opening the garage door. Jessica nodded in agreement. Her mom pushed the garage remote and she eased the Honda Pilot out of the garage. She closed the door to the garage as soon as they were out. Riley’s school was only ten minutes away from the house. Within that short drive, they had seen crazed people killing their neighbors, crashing into one another, and bloody corpses along the way. The sights along the way were terrifying. There was death, carnage, and destruction along the way. Several buildings were on fire.

The emergency siren was blaring……

Jessica’s mom drove right up to the front door of the school, driving on the sidewalk, and pulling up within feet of the secured door.

She lowered her voice and told Jessica that she had to get Riley. Her mom asked Jessica to stay in the car.

Heading toward her was a man walking. He looked like he had been hit with a car. His gait was slow but he was determined. The closer he got, the more Jessica could see the blood that covered his face and shirt. His eyes were glossy black, the veins on his next were a dark blue and jutted out against his pale white skin. He was foaming at the mouth.

He scared the crap out of Jessica.

She wished she had a chance to roll the window up all the way. This man terrified her, as he ambled toward the car, and she was trapped inside.

Less than five minutes later, her mom and Riley ran out the secure door. The bloody man was almost to the car. Jessica’s mom dropped the keys. Riley screamed. The sound of him screaming terrified Jessica. She saw what he was looking at. Jessica counted 5 more people running toward the car. They looked homicidal. They were sprinting directly toward mom and Riley……their mouths foaming and their black eyes looked terrifying.

The next thing Jessica heard was a soft wooshing sound. She looked out the sunroof to see a strange looking fighter jet hovering above the SUV.

Two dark figures jumped out.

One of the men was bigger than the other. His mask covered his face. He was big and wearing military looking gear. The other man had a jaw line like Jason Statham, he looked like he hadn’t saved in a few days. The whoosh moved and the aircraft moved into a higher area.

Jessica heard the sound of something powering up and then she heard it again. The runners were close to mom and Riley. Jessica screamed. The first shot tore the head off the lead runner. A number of shots hit the rest, in very rapid succession. It was like Boom, Boom, Boom!

The man with the facial hair, looked at her mom and Riley. He picked up the keys and handed them to mom. As she was starting the engine, the other guy in all black, with the blacked out mask shot the bloody slow walking guy. He nailed him right in the face. The kinetic energy, knocked the man off his feet, and he hit the pavement flying end over end.

My mom yelled out “Thank you!” as she peeled out.

Mom took us back home and barricaded the house.

We turned on the television and watched the violence occurring all over the planet.

Turns out those two guys who saved us were “The Evil Overlord” and “Mayhem”….

They saved us and they ended up killing hundreds of infected that day in the school parking lot. They were protecting the school.

I’ll never forget the sound of their rifles powering up. It was crazy, scary, and when everyone else ran away those two ran toward the carnage. They weren't afraid of ****.

Even to this day, I’ll never forget them.

 

I like the name "Mayhem" for you.....kind of suits you.
