What's the cheapest gaming PC that can run most modern games? I'm not looking for 4k graphics or anything fancy, I just want something that can run new games at over 30fps. The highest I want to spend is $600, but the lower, the better.

I can run every game at high to max settings comfortably excluding stuff like bf4. I paid about $890 and get a lot more than 30fps on games. It's likely you can get what you're looking for at a few hundred bucks. I can hook you up with a friend that does budget pc builds if you'd like.

I think building your own PC is much cheaper, it's easier said than done (especially with laptops).

A budget would help a lot with making suggestions since new games are very different.

Tbh, You should probably just wait till you have 1000$ and then buy a gaming pc.
Buying a 600$ pc is a waste imo

There's no reason to spend 1000$ for what he said he needs imo.

Only looking for a budget PC at the moment. I plan on using this just to play PC exclusives and take advantage of sales on steam, then eventually saving up for a very expensive PC, 4-5 years down the line.

I also think that $600 is a bit too small of a budget for a gaming PC, instead go for $700 - $800.

Whatsoever, this is a quick list of components you could get for $600: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fkPbZ8 (didn't thoroughly check for compatibility, but it would likely work).
To give you a perspective: For $140 more you could add a 128GB SSD, swap the GTX 1050 Ti for a RX470, the i5-6400 for a i5-6600K and the MSI B150 PC Mate for an MSI Z170 PC Mate (means you could overclock the PC, even though that would likely require a new cooler as well).

    You could also wait for the release of AMD Ryzen 5 and then get a Ryzen 5 1400 ($170, 4 Cores / 8 Threads, 3.2 Ghz) or a Ryzen 5 1500X ($190, 4 Cores / 8 Threads, 3.5 Ghz).

If your concerned about prices, might I suggest getting a pre-loved PC, or at least some pre loved components? Might be worth your while to do some hunting on ebay for a decent, well looked after component for less money? Then combine that with other parts you purchase brand new, for a decent PC on a tight budget?

Late reply, but @The_Murph and I built this one for him. Basically, we were able to do it cheap by going AMD and not getting too much ram, an overkill GPU, etc. The cost right now is $545 which includes a headset, keyboard, and mouse. Compared to the Intel version, going AMD is always cheap.

The PC has no issues running anything (asfaik). Murph has been playing any game he wants, "proof".

Also, here is another cheap example build I brainstormed for Andy: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/chickenputty/saved/#view=mvXmP6

Some extra pleasures for both would be more RAM, a SSD, modular power supply, and a better case.

P.S. When picking out GPUs use http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html. You can see which performs best for the cost.

Uh, the price is $545 because the graphics card and the keyboard are currently not available there is thus no price. With the GTX 960 for ~$250 and the keyboard/mouse combo for ~$30, it would cost $825. Also, isn't a case for $150 overkill for a build with such a budget? You can get a $60 case and a decent SSD like the 850 Evo for the $90 left.

You're right, but the cost would still be near $600-$700 when done correctly.

You could upgrade to a GeForce GTX 1060 for $219 too.

    Correcting the price:
    $545.97 - $38.72 (headset) + $219 (GTX 1060) = $726.25

    Using a cheaper case:
    $726.25 - $149.99 (case) + $49.99 (other case NZXT S340) = $626.25

Also, when using PCPartPicker it will let you find coupons and rebates, so you could very well make a similar build for even cheaper.

I mean, sure, but what are you looking for? You have a huge SSD (are you working with a lot of media? trying to boot every game you own quickly?), you have a decent amount of ram (are you going to be running VMs? are you going to have tons of applications open?), etc.

If you are going to make a $1300+ build perhaps you should scale back on the SSD space, remove the extra Windows copy, etc. to get an i7 vs an i5. The build is expensive enough to justify it.

(You can download Windows from Microsoft directly and just use your old key)

For overkill builds, maybe refer to https://pcpartpicker.com/user/chickenputty/saved/#view=VCcFf7. It's outdated, but no corners were cut.

I record and edit MC and Far Cry, I might start playing Battlefront II when it comes out, Battlefront I alone is 60 gigs.
I'd love to use Windows 10 and as far as I know, you're unable to use old keys on a new PC.
An i7 might be an idea.
Since this will be a summer project and I've never built a PC from scratch before, will I need extra wiring? Is there anything else I need to buy?

Most people use their SSD for their OS and important frequently used files/programs, then a HDD for storage and the rest.

All the wires will come from the PSU, you shouldn't need to buy any. I recommend watching a few build videos.

My current PC is very similar, so I would say this is a balanced build. You said you edit videos, depending on how heavy the editing is, you might want to look into the Ryzen 5 lineup. They are cheaper than an i7 but still have lots of cores and threads at a slightly lower clock speed.
The cooler is a bit weird; is there a specific reason why you chose a low profile one? It might not work that well with the usual airflow in a case.
You could get a cheaper motherboard, unless you picked this one because of Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, RGB lighting options or slightly better sound.

As Putty said, all wiring for power come with the PSU. The motherboard should come with at least 2 SATA-3 cables and the case fans + the CPU cooler also come with the required 4-pin cable for connecting them.

Keep in mind that the connection to an external hard drive is usually slower than the one to an internal hard drive. A decent two TB hard drive costs around 75€ and I would definitely include one.

Oh that reminds me! Should I play with a LAN cable or get a wifi card?
I thought I might get a slightly worse cooler because it might be saving money - of course I can get a more expensive one :>
Sound isn't too important to me.
