Religion, in its most generic sense, is the beliefs and practices of a given person. At the center of every religion is a "god" of sorts - the entity or concept that is seen as the ultimate good to model oneself after. A church is an organized religion with some structure or form of authority.

A person is thus of the Christian religion if they believe and act in a way that models the beliefs and actions of Jesus Christ. Different churches, such as the Catholics, Methodists, or Latter-Day Saints, all claim to be organizations of this religion that have authoritative power granted to them by Christ.

A person is a Muslim if they believe and act in accordance with the God of Islam, or a Jew if they act after the manner of The God of Israel, etc etc. Many people who claim to be of a certain religion, of course, are not actually of that religion - many people who claim to believe the teachings of Buddha do not actually do what Buddha taught, for example.

Atheism is thus a religion - but the god of atheism is not a supernatural entity, it is whatever concept or natural entity is seen as the ultimate good instead. This may be money, "science", love, themselves, power, their mother, tolerance, etc.

Do you not understand what religion is?

Atheism is the opposite of religion... Organized atheism is still the opposite of religion.

The American Atheists, from what little I've read, seem actually pretty cool. Defending seperation of church and state and all that. I'd probably like to join if I were American. What was vile about their founder? She sued because her son was being harrassed for not being religious? Because he was having religion forced at him? Good on her.

Fact: 84% of the world is delusional.

She was known as "The most hated woman in America". I think she really wanted religion banned. She was a Soviet sympathizer.
Her son, William, eventually became a Christian minister. She hated him for that. She said after learning of it, "One could call this a postnatal abortion on the part of a mother, I guess; I repudiate him entirely and completely for now and all times. He is beyond human forgiveness." What a nice mother.
Still, it's sad she was murdered by a fellow atheist.

Sometimes fighting for what's right gets you a lot of hate. If you can quote her saying she wants religion banned, I'll no longer agree with her, but otherwise it's just a strawman. As for Soviet sympathizing... depends what you mean by sympathy. I mean yeah the Soviets did a lot of awful things but America was far far far from perfect.

Oh and that thing with her son, that's just fking awful, what a horrid mother. I still support her politically, to my knowledge, but that's horrendous. If my kid became a Christian minister I'd try my best to persuade them of the truth, but if that's what they really wanted to do, I'd accept it.

Overall she doesn't sound like a very good person tbh, but I do think that she was right to fight against religion in schools. America would be far better off if they just got rid of religion altogether.

I guess I can agree with her on challenging the prayers and stuff in schools. They should be neutral locations.

don't believe in god. I use Christian believes but without the religious parts.
I don't care what can't of believe someone has. I just strongly disagree with people who do bad stuff because their religion told them to do so. (Radical Islam)

I like the idea of roman gods. I just don't believe in it.

How has god ever helped you @Gehenna_Beam and why do you believe he os real

Religion, over the ages, has caused countless bloody wars, along with mass killings. Tell me, why don't people realize that the "man in the sky" isn't ****ing real?

And? It had no context, please tell me why you put it in this thread.

This is called luck, not "divine blessing" or that bull****, there is a chance that you will be born into unfortunate/deplorable circumstances, and that isn't "Gods will", even if there was a God, why the hell would he care about humans? Also, how the hell could He manage to bless 7.5 billion people?
