In my opinion, owning a gun is just asking for trouble. I see the appeal of having one for self defense, but what's to defend yourself again if no one else has one either?

exactly. sure there are rapists out there but you can just bash their head in with a rock, no need for weapons of mass destruction

If you see an American there's a 88.8% chance they own a legal firearm. There are people who buy ~<80% finished upper receivers to 'self' make their own untraceable ARs. I personally know 3 people who've made bored out fully functional semi rifles from stock steel. I've even made a crappy shotgun from a 4140 steel pipe, steel scraps, a spring, and a welder. The point I'm getting at is 'gun control' would never work for the US. People are too obsessed with them and value their right to have them. The number of guns in the US is nothing more than a guess at this point. I think fatal violence in the US wouldn't be as high if guns weren't fabricated into people's rights but I think the absence of their existence would've made the US far more vulnerable as it was developing. At the end of the day people still have them and no extent of gun control's going to remove the ridiculous amount of 'ghost' weapons in the US. Killing's still illegal, guns are impossible to remove from the unwilling mass, and there will always be the handful with intentions beyond law. As I've stated to people in the past "Gun control in the US would be one hell of a Where's Waldo series".

I can't get an airsoft here, not to mention firearms.

Should have common sense gun measures (which the NRA opposes) including background checks, gun permits (there is a state that does not require this), ban on automatics, ban on selling guns to the mentally ill, and ban on people on the no-fly list. Certain types of bullets (i.e. lead tipped) and the quantity that you can buy should also be limited.

Other than that I don't care. We have concealed carry on my college campus and there's never been an issue. In some cases, responsible people carrying guns have actually stopped mass shootings - as was the case in the recent Texas mass shooting. Although that didn't have anything to do with concealed carry, the scenario isn't entirely different. Imo the prevalence of guns isn't what causes mass shootings. It's depression/insanity and worsening poverty that does.

Guns are fun to use, especially as a sporting way, such as hunting and target practice. It is also a good tool for self defense as I think everyone should know the safety and the proper operation of a firearm/
