Hello all! I'm looking for help in designing / buying a desktop PC for my parents to work on. Right now we have a really terrible PC that broke in like 2 months and keeps freezing, so they're looking for a new PC so they can work from home.

Both of my parents have jobs where they need to store tons of files (my dad is a dean at a University | my mom is a bookkeeper at a church and also works with Operation Christmas Child), so I'd like to get a good hard drive with lots of storage. This PC won't be used for gaming, so you don't have to worry about hi-spec graphics cards.

Any help is much appreciated, whether it's linking to a premade desktop PC or listing parts. My parents would like to stay under $1,000, but they don't need a supercomputer just to do some paperwork cx

    Thanks!

If I'm correct, you want to build the PC, right? I have created a custom build for you to build. If I misread your first sentence and you want a pre-built PC instead, I can find you one. However, this is the custom build part list and the total price came up to $429.46.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bNjLCy

Please take your time reading the part explanations below because I've asked you questions about some parts, and you know why I selected these specific parts.

The Kaby Lake-based Pentium G4600 is the best sub-$100 CPU ever released. While its model name doesn't give away what lies beneath, this is a 3.6GHz dual-core, hyperthreaded processor, which means it's much faster than the 3.5GHz G4500 dual-core CPU released in 2015. The two cores provided by hyperthreading means it operates a whole lot more like a $120 Core i3-7100 processor than any previous Pentium processor ever could. Also, the CPU has a built-in HD 630 graphics chip which means you don't need a dedicated graphics card since the PC's purpose isn't for gaming.

I chose this because this inexpensive board is absolutely packed with features.

With RAM prices spiraling out of control (in a bad way!), it was quite difficult finding cheap RAM. However, this 2x4GB (8GB in total) is under $100 which is the best I can find right now as there is no 8GB ram stick under $70, which wasn't the case in 2015. 8GB is better than 4GB in this case because of futureproofing.

The responsiveness of a system with an SSD is so superior to systems with a hard drive that I simply don't think you should build a PC in 2018 without one. In my opinion, this SSD should be used for installing Windows on and some applications.

Among the lowest-priced cases on the market, I chose this Zalman case because there are a trustworthy brand and other cheaper cases are made by brands I haven't heard of. Just a personal preference I guess. You may need to buy a fan as this case might not come with fans. However, I will get back to you on that one.

EVGA's 450 model offers unmatched value, providing Bronze-rated efficiency and quiet operation. I selected this because even though your build's power consumption comes up to 146W, you may require the extra wattage for any future upgrades (like adding a dedicated graphics card).

I added a 1TB Western Digital HDD which is the best value 1TB HDD on the market right now. However, you did state that you need a lot of space for mass data storage so I'm not sure if you require more than 1TB. Please let me know if you require more than 1TB and I'll make the necessary changes to the build. For now, there is a 1TB HDD in the build.

Also, do you require a monitor and peripherals like a mouse and keyboard?

First off, thanks a ton for your input! (and for keeping it under $500)

We do have a monitor / keyboard / mouse for the new PC, but if you have any recommendations, I'm open to listening.

I think 1TB of storage should be fine, and I don't have a preference between building the PC and buying one pre-built. Would this PC come with a disk drive?

Here is a mouse and keyboard combo I have found for about $16: http://amzn.to/2DF665w. I couldn't add it to the PCPartPicker build because the mouse and keyboard combo wasn't available in the part list for some reason, sorry about that. I didn't include a monitor because monitors are quite expensive at the moment, and it would mean that your build will go over $600 most likely, which I want to try and avoid. Since you already have a monitor, I didn't add it to the build.

Answering your question about the disk drive, it does include a 1TB hard drive, yes.

The total amount of the build should come up to $445.46. However, there may be extra shipping costs for the mouse and keyboard.
