    Hello!
Just a few minutes ago, I was in game at the Nether town searching around for weapons and armor, with my Compass placed in my bar set to find Enemies. The compass was spiraling as it does when it cannot detect any nearby opponents, so I was given the impression I was safe with no company around. I had taken a couple quick glimpses for any enemies just in case and saw no one. I was just leaving one of the buildings when I stopped for a second to rearrange my inventory while still keeping an eye on my compass when all of the sudden out of no where I heard the sniper bullet sound and I was killed and left with a red screen.

My game is currently on maximum everything when it comes to rendering detail and chunks and everything, and I saw nobody. I know for a fact that the compass can see further then I can see people, and so the possibility that the compass didn't pick someone up within the vicinity of my rendering distance seems very unlikely. This is what happened.

    Thanks for reading!

The render distance in 1.7 is really stupid, maybe the guy sniped you from a further distance than your compass could see him or the compass is just isn't working

Normally I would agree with you but I know for a fact that the Compass can see further then the longest render distance. If he were further then that then it means he would have sniped me blind and/or had some sort of aimbot hack but I honestly doubt it. I'm almost sure it was broken.

Perhaps, but when I was on yesterday they functioned perfectly.

It is a possibility that he logged really close to you and just shot you with a barret. I know you said you were keeping an eye on it but there is a possibility that a quick look away was all he needed to shoot you. I've experienced 0 bugs with the compass the past couple of days, so I'm not sure on what could've happened. There's also the possibility of you having the compass set on towns or friends by accident, but from how you tell the story that sounds unlikely.

Yeah that was the weird part. I was playing around (estimate) of 3-4 hours yesterday (Happy Thanksgiving!) and it worked mostly all the time except that moment. So I don't really know.

Maybe he was running in circle above you which made it look like it was spinning! (So Unlikely but it happened to me once no joke)

People rely on their compass to much theses days.
    I rarely use it.
Even if there is no enemy sighted, I always look around for name tags.

If you are friended to someone and they aren't friended to you they won't show on your compass i'm pretty sure....

Hmm that is pretty true but I only had my best friend friended at the time because we were playing together and he wasn't on when it happened. Great possibility though,

It is still very possible that the player was out of the compass' radius and therefore you could not detect the player. And there is many prone spots in the nether in which snipers can hide, peek round a corner or up a hill, shoot you, and hide again. This is probably what happened. Not much of a 'Compass Glitch'.

Ok, One of the problems people for get is, When you friend some one and they don't (or they do the they de-friend you), they are still a enemy but don't show on the your compass, this is because you have them friend ed still, If this is the problem, then blame 1.7.......

I lost my dependency on them when they were taken out of your starting gear. It took me forever but i have now became pretty good without a compass.

I think that there is a timer for your compass to notice the nearest enemy. If they just log on, for a couple of seconds, your compass won't detect them.

The player could've just logged on, or you could've been friend-ed with them but they weren't friend-ed with you.
