    Brawl Junior Moderator Application

    Read over this thread: http://www.brawl.com/threads/14752/
If you do not meet the requirements (active, helpful, must have Discord, etc) do not apply yet; it will be an auto deny.

What is your in-game name? - Paddishly.
Is your Minecraft account secured and migrated? - Yes.

How old are you? - 20.
What time zone are you in? - AEST (GMT+10), 14 hours ahead of EST.
Are you multilingual? Can you speak multiple languages? - I only speak English.

What is your experience and knowledge of Brawl? - I’ve been on Brawl just over 2 years now, first joined 31st of March 2018. I have played fairly consistently since then and joined the competitive scene at the end of August 2018, becoming a member with Unity. Since then I jumped around various teams until eventually landing a spot on Olympus where I am now Council. I’ve maintained a pretty high level of activity in the Community Discord and In-Game, slowly getting to know those active in the community and the various rules and structures that Brawl has in place, although I still have more to learn I’m sure. Since then I have also joined CMS, commentating my first match on November 16th 2019, and have continued to be an active member. Most notably, in this role I have helped to contribute to a large number of discussions within the CMS Discord, especially when the tournament first began, helping Foodcourt and Ninsanity organise commentators & streamers and beginning the format of CMS #33 (https://www.brawl.com/threads/76178/).

What is your experience with moderating servers, if any? - I have no experience but am very willing to learn.

Why do you want to become a moderator on Brawl? - One of the main reasons I want to become moderator is to help the community in times that the EU or US mods aren’t available as I am an Australian player and am often awake to assist during these “early hours” (for EST). As SuperBen4 resigned, I believe auromelt is the only moderator for this time frame on CTF so assisting her in filling this slot would be great, as often she is not available. The late night community is often plagued with fairly obvious hackers, using kill aura, fly and so on, and being able to do something about it earlier, rather than wait for the banhammer which often takes a long time, would be a great way for me to assist the community. I have occasionally recorded these events but haven’t managed to report them on the forums as I try to use /report instead. Outside of this I’d also love to contribute to various CTF staff discussions and help formulate plans for the future of the game mode. I think I can add some valuable input with a unique perspective, helping to represent a lot of the Australian community (we are small but still existent!).

Have you ever used a hacked client before? - No, I haven't used a hacked client.
Have you ever been punished (banned, kicked, muted, etc) legitimately on a public Minecraft server? If so, why? - I was autobanned once on the match server in the middle of a Water Taste practice but that is the only stain on my discipline history. (https://www.brawl.com/history/player/Paddishly)

What do you consider your greatest strength? - I think in general I’m enthusiastic and quite willing to learn/teach. I really enjoyed making contributions to CMS throughout the tournament, it made me feel like I was consistently helping to represent the server in a good way with the high energy of the tournament. Assisting newer players is always an important factor and whenever I see a question in chat or notice something in their gameplay (like not using steak), I try to help by sending a message in chat or PMs.

What do you consider your greatest weakness? - I think as all players I can become a little frustrated at the game or other players, yet I believe I have quite a good grasp on it as I know when to take a little breather or to calm down. Maintaining this is always difficult and I’m sure throughout my 2 years I have hackusated some players in call but I’ve learnt from that and keep it to myself. Additionally my overall experience across Brawl is lacking as I have mainly played CTF, with short stints on Kit, War, War-Z and Party with friends allowing me to gain a basic understanding of how they work, yet I still need to learn more. I have had some experience with Build, mainly through providing feedback to others and being a contributor on Waterfalls (427677), a current map in rotation. My largest weakness by far is that I still have a lot to learn but I am more than willing to, I know a lot of the staff team and would call on them if I ever needed a hand or to learn something.

Which Brawl server(s) are you most active on? - CTF.

How many Brawl staff applications have you made in the past? - 0.
What is the date of the last application you submitted? - N/A.
Do you have Discord? My Discord is Paddy#9263.

Anything else you would like to state? - I am writing this staff app off the back of a 3-week disappearance to focus on my final assignments for university, so am aware that my recent activity has been down. Please know that if I were to be a staff member, I would ensure the community knew through posting an Away thread. Further, my forums activity is lower than it probably should be, this comes from reading posts and noting that I have nothing meaningful to contribute but it is definitely something I should work on to ensure the community is getting feedback. I welcome criticism on this, I know I have a long way to go still and the community/other staff members can help me to learn through feedback. Thank you for reading! :grinning:

I’ve never written one of these before, but I’ll try to keep it brief.

I have had the privilege of playing with you on Olympus for years now, and in that time I’ve seen no reason to believe that you’re a bad fit for the staff team, and all the reason to believe that you’d do a stellar job. You’ve done terrific work on Olympus’ council, and I’ve been told about the workload you shoulder for CMS. You’re active, contribute to discussions, and, most importantly, you’re respected and well-liked by the community. I’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who has anything bad to say about Paddishly.

Of course, I’m saying this as a friend and teammate, but to someone who perhaps isn’t as well-informed about your reputation or your standing in the community (say, a War or Raid player), your application says it all. Your responses are detailed yet concise and you can tell you didn’t throw this application together on a whim. Most importantly, however, you’re honest about your inexperience moderating and your relative unfamiliarity with other gamemodes. And, from that honesty, you leave no doubt that you’re able and willing to put the effort forth to work around such shortcomings. I see this honesty as particularly important, especially when transparency between staff members and the community is a hot topic of discussion as of late.

The only things that draw you back, some of which I briefly touched on, are your inexperience, both with moderating and with Brawl’s other gamemodes, and your forum activity. Like I said, your inexperience is nothing that can’t be solved with effort, time and instruction, so I see no reason why this should hold your application back. Now, I, myself, don’t hold someone’s forum activity in very high esteem when reading over a staff application. The number of posts you have isn’t remarkable, but there have been previously-accepted applicants with posts numbering less than half of yours. Nevertheless, it’s worth pitching in to forum discussions more moving forward, even if it’s not a major object of concern. Besides, I’d say that most of the discussion about CTF happens on Discord anyway, and you definitely aren’t lacking in that regard.

It’s not very often that an applicant comes through who checks all of the boxes. That’s not to say there’s nowhere to improve, as mentioned above. No application is perfect. But believe me when I say you’re just about as good as it gets. Undoubtedly a +1.

Hi Paddy! I don't want to seem biased as we are friends, but I think you would be a terrific staff member. The work you have done for CMS is incredible, and I have no doubt you would be willing to handle the staff workload. You are very friendly, and I have played matches with you where you should have had every right to tilt, but you were mature and levelheaded, which is a quality that is needed for a staff position. You have a very good standing with the community, and you have good experience within the team scene.
You are active in discussions in CTF general disc, so I have no worries about your lack of forums posts because I know that you have contributed a lot in terms of your ideas and feedback. I also have no worries about your activity in game, as I know you were busy with uni and before your hiatus you were VERY active despite your timezone (which is another +1, we can always use more mods outside of typical timezomes)

    Easy +1, good luck!

Thank you Peppe, your kind words of advice mean a lot and I'll definitely take what you have said on board. I will admit to contemplating boosting my forums activity prior to posting this application but thought it'd be particularly dishonest to do so, however, it is definitely an important aspect to consider moving forward.

You are far too kind, thank you! <3

Also to anyone who wants to -1 me (which is absolutely fine) and don't want to post on here please feel free to PM me on Discord, seriously any feedback is good feedback and I welcome it wholeheartedly! :grinning:

Honestly, I see no reason for you to not become a staff member.

You're very mature from what I've seen +1

You're nice to everyone regardless of the situation, and overall, just a really good person and player +1

This is a very well-written application. It’s honest, concise, and really showcases your passion towards making a difference in the community.

First and foremost, I will approach the following feedback by focusing almost exclusively on your involvement outside of Olympus – just to maintain an unbiased perspective as best as possible.

    Maturity?
100%. You are understanding, kind, and very patient. Despite your claims of hackusating people in the past, you seem to have drifted away from that behavior almost entirely. I have played with you in many, many PPMs, and you are always very calm and composed – even in high-stress situations. I think it’s safe to say that everyone can have bad days and get easily frustrated. However, I have never seen you act out of malice or treat other players with disrespect. +1

    Activity?
There is a lot of experience under your belt. You have been an involved member of CMS, and I am happy to have commentated alongside of you during several official matches. Balancing university and leisure activities is hard. No doubt about it. Even so, you clearly make an effort to hang around whenever you can. That really shows your devotion to the server as a whole.

    Helpfulness?
“I think in general I’m enthusiastic and quite willing to learn/teach.” This quote of your’s summarizes the requirement perfectly. Some people treat helping others as a burden. However, you appear to be quite authentic in your desire to lend a hand to the community. I do not see any problems.

    Report Rule Breakers?
I like your acknowledgement of the need for a more “time zone diverse” team of CTF moderators. It’s absolutely true. Nothing much to add here, but it’s good to hear that you are recording instances of hackers. That’s a great start.

Above all of this, you have one trait that reigns supreme: humility. You are able to comfortably admit mistakes and wrongdoings. That shows a lot of character, and definitely seals the deal for me (personally speaking). Good luck!
