My hotbar once geared-ish
1. Sword
2. Auto
3. Shotgun
4. Sniper
5. Food (pasta preferably)
6. Bones
7. Bandages
8. Misc (Grenades, Molotovs, Parachute, Barbed wire, Shears, Lime Dye. spare space basically)
9. Compass

 

My hotbar is almost always full. It goes..
Sword, bones, bandages, food (of any type, preferably pasta or fish), automatic, sniper, shotgun, pistol (you may ask why pistol, this is to keep zombies away and this is also my chipper) compass

PS- (offtopic) just posting before I have to go to school.

 

Now I would disagree a bit. Especially considering how often a sword is used as well as food.
Depending on the loadout, it would go something like.

1- Food
2- Sword
3- Shotgun
4- Sniper
5- Auto
6- Bone
7- Bandages
8- Compass
9- Misc.

Food is always your primal and most valuable asset. Having it so close to reach with your finger makes the game a lot easier.
Sword is a moot point because you will always be able to hit something or someone with it.
Shotgun because being able to nail a few sword strikes then mow them down with your shotgun means a quick job well done.
Sniper here because its always been a fair thing to do. Not to close, nor too far. Plus the 4 key is equally close to my finger.
Automatic here in case you have time to roll to it, or just to switch back and forth between sniper and machine gun. Its a rather nasty combo.
Bone and Bandage are naturally next to one another.
Compass here, because you can still see it, without interference.
I chose my misc slot last, so I can scroll to it from 1 without having to accidentally change my compass setting.
