I got a Xeon 5550 and 24GB ram for an aging Gateway FX6800-01e (w/o video card.)
I'm thinking about either trashing the system, and purchasing Xeon E3-1230v3, Supermicro motherboard and 32GB ram.
Or upgrading the Gateway's mobo to something with reasonable additions and throwing in 48GB ram.

Trashing the system and purchasing a new one will run me about 880$, but it's only capable of 32GB ram.
Upgrading the current system will run me about 1020$, but it's capable two processors and 96GB ram.

I intend to use this system for virtualization1, just as I'm using the aging system right now (hosting a small Feed The Beast server, along with a website, and some file sharing.)
1 (The installed operating system2 running other operating systems3 on a single machine at the same time .)
    2 (XenServer, vSphere, Hyper-V)
3 (Windows 7/8.1, OSX Mavericks, GNU/Linux (Ubuntu, CentOS, etc...))

Do I trash it, or upgrade it?
    Choose :V

Upgrades are always good, however, I will let you pick.

Upgrade. It'll be worth it in the long run.
Plus, you have a massive amount of room to expand upon.

I don't know that much about computers and there specs, but I know upgrading will pay off well in the long run.
