If you've ever played the original one, you'll know the graphics and gameplay style is completely different. I for one think the original was better because the game induced the player into a more scary, dark environment. That gave the game a greater challenge. However, the sequel is more of a silly, cartoonish environment. While it's still a great game, it doesn't give you that sense of dread unlike the 1st installment. Plus, the graphics are entirely different. You don't get a sense of fright when a ghost suddenly pops out unlike the original.

For people who've never seen the original, I'll compare it side by side.

Original, because at the time, it hadn't been done, and it was quite original and cool. But I do like both.

Both games have their different strengths, coming from someone who has played both multiple times.
The biggest divide between both games is the mission system for Luigi's Mansion 2 (Dark Moon in NA). although I did not enjoy the game more from this change, I can see the thought behind the decision. Luigi's Mansion 2 is a handheld game, so the mechanics should be thought with its play style in mind. People who buy it will tend to have shorter play sessions, so a mission system is a pretty effective choice. This also allows people to replay missions over and over to get better scores and acquire all the collectables. Luigi's Mansion took only a few hours to beat, but had many secrets that made you play they game many times to try and get the best rank possible. Each method is better for its system, so it is mostly down to preference there, although I prefer the original method of one single play through.

The controls were one of the biggest concerns for Luigi's Mansion 2, as the 3DS with no add-ons has only one Circle Pad. The gyroscope controls felt great to use for the Strobulb and the Poltergust 5000. The point was to emulate the tug-and-war feel of the combat, so both do their job well. The only aspect of the new controls that were limited was not being able to freely turn Luigi and move him with two different sticks, but the Strobulb allowed Luigi to sidestep, so it was sort of fixed. I personally enjoyed the combat in Luigi's Mansion better as the upgrade system was not in-depth enough to make combat more satisfying, as well as made the game feel easier than it should.

The last big thing is the game's aesthetics. Graphically speaking, people usually talk about power and not about style, and I will focus on the style of both games. From the beginning of both games, it is clear how both games would tackle their settings and atmosphere. Luigi's Mansion was supposed to be a suspenseful game, but not go all-out to create a completely terrifying atmosphere. Everything done in that game was to complement this kind of game feel. Luigi's Mansion 2, much to everyone's surprise, was not an entirely horror-filled game. It is clear that is was taking a complete light-hearted approach to the horror-genre, like Disney would handle their horror rides. It was bright, with a lot of soft scares intended to get initial laughs more than fear, and focused a lot on how silly Luigi reacted with his environment rather than how he was terrified by it. By principle, both games are fine since both games complete the kind of game feel that they were trying to achieve, but it is what the consumer will want and get that will affect how they enjoyed each game. Luigi's Mansion, like most other games that create an unsettling atmosphere will sparingly use sound as a means to emulate what the game is trying to tell to the player. The music will never swell unless in the main hallway of the area, or when creating a mode for boss fights. Luigi's Mansion 2, however, uses music throughout the game, usually never waning off for the intent of unsettling the player. The music in 2 was to give an overall feeling of the mansion being explored itself, not give a feeling of Luigi, the character the player is supposed to empathize with, as he travels through a mansion. And these songs did what they were trying to convey extremely well. The music for the Secret Mine makes you feel like you are freezing up, all alone.

Hopefully this post will supplement for what the OP was trying to convey.

The first one because they made it more realistic with the ghosts and was actually a challenge. Also, mission mode is terrible

...Pretty bold statement considering you said you need played Dark Moon.
I can respect your opinion, but judging two games that play completely differently, trust me, they do, by just looking at each is not a sincere form of judgement at all.
