If you ever writing a Civics report on Martin Luther King Jr. I gotchu

    Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta Georgia, United States of America and later was assassinated on April 4, 1968 at the age of 39 in Memphis, Tennessee. As a child, King’s encounters with racial discrimination were mild but formative. The first significant one came when he began school. His white friends were to attend a different school than him, and, once the year began, their parents no longer allowed King to come over and play. It was these events that first led his mother to explain to him the history of slavery and segregation. King grew in a family that encouraged him to notice and respond to injustices. Later in life, his father and mother would continue to support King’s choices, though they were forced at time to witness the tragic consequences of those choices, including their son’s assassination.

Martin Lither King had a major impact on civil rights. King played a part in many well-known civil rights movements in the 1950s and 1960s such as the Montgomery boycott of the city buses, which was a protest campaign against the racial segregation on the public transit system in Montgomery, Alabama. The boycott’s official end signaled one of the civil rights movement’s first victories and made King one of its central figures. Another civil rights movement was the Albany movement in 1961. Perhaps Kings most famous act as a civil rights leader came during the march on Washington for jobs and freedom. The largest political rally ever seen in the US, it was between 200,000 and 300,000 police and participants, to whom king delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Among other things, the speech supported racial harmony and economic rights for African-Americans. It was estimated that 80 percent of the marchers were black. King participated in multiple civil rights movements that shaped the future for African-Americans rights and freedoms and was greatly responsible for the passing of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act for African-Americans, both in the mid-1960s.

Martin Luther King Jr. had a vision of a society in which race was not an issue in how people were treated or in how they were allowed to live their lives. While nothing is perfect or complete in the battle for civil rights, the efforts of King and those like him have, in fact, changed the country and the world, for the better, in noticeable ways. His vision has made the world a more equal place, if not an equal one, and it has helped to ensure that minorities have a voice. For his efforts he has received various rewards and recognition, such as the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, and in 1977 the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Jimmy Carter although he had been dead for several years before receiving the award.
