Tip: Use only one hotbar slot for food.
You ask why, but it's simple. Each food is for different situations. Use cheap food like beans when your'e not in combat and just roaming around. Then swap out the beans with something like pasta or fish for fights as they restore much more health per use. You never want to solely rely on beans in a fight unless you have nothing else. Plus it saves hotbar space for bandages, grenades, etc.

But I guess the advantages to reserving 3 slots for food is that you can "combo" them like guns , so you can quickly eat 3 pieces of food without the annoying delay (macros OP)

 

As long as you have a compass, it's hard to get ambushed, since you will know where the enemy is and you will have enoug time to equip proper items before fighting them. If you don't have a compass and you get ambushed, well I guess your'e screwed anyways. However, you can avoid ambushes if you listen to your surroundings (footsteps, zombies, opening chests/doors)

 

You should also have wire cutters in your inventory. Maybe bandages too (Not necessary).

 

Because when you're full d a deagle will help
A whoooole lot.
Swords are pointless because zombies broke
Replace the water bottle with pepsi, it's easier to find and stackable.

Because there is a delay to how fast you can eat I find it after to switch between food. For example, from fish to pasta, instead of just spam eating fish. I find this woks better.

 

Paper differently has to be in your hotbar in my opinion.
