One of the most common complaints from McPvPers that I see is with the swear filter - its easy to understand why, I personally dislike it too. However, some Brawlers agree with it, saying that its better to make sure the chat is nicer than letting you say what you wanted. In my opinion, it'd be best to have a mix of both:

    • On joining for the first time, the swear filter would be turned on.
    • If you do /toggle swears, you can see swear words in your chat that would usually be ****'d out.
    • If you don't want to see swear words, you can either not do the command, or toggle it off by doing the command again.

This means that, whatever people's thoughts on swear filters are, everyone can be happy with it.

This is what league does, works just fine, you understand they swore but don't see it.

This just seems like a hassle to code and its unnecessary.

Listen, as you said before there are a lot of 'noobs' at Brawl, and I'm quoting you on that. The most probable reason for that is probably because we are more well know then McPvP. It also might be because our servers and forums are a little more 'user friendly' than PvP's. Whatever the case I believe it is defiantly a possibility that PvP was losing players because of no chat filter. Some people aren't as lucky as we are and might have to use the family computer in the living room. Our most poplar server is Minecraft Party and the attracts younger players. Most parents (I hope) don't want their kids to be seeing this sort of thing, but lets be honest all the kids want to know cuss words. So if it says "Use /toggle swears to turn off out annoying chat filter." Most kids will turn it off and if their parents see it we just lost a player.

Now some of us like to swear, like myself but not in a negative way. Lots of people on Brawl love to call other people rude and disrespectful things. The chat filter makes it less likely for someone to get angry and rage at another person.

I think this is an excellent idea, certainly wouldn't be hard to code at all.

A chat filter command that would be unadvertised and there as an option only for players who look for it would be a great idea. I miss my swearing and i know nearly every other mcpvper misses it also. What works for one person may not work for the other and in this case something as easy as an optional chat filter that wont effect the other party is a decent idea.

While having a completely optional and non-advertised filter may lose the occasional player, people need to blow off steam online and sometimes swearing is part of that. Many people played McPvP because of the one rule philosophy, and this is the easiest way for brawl to claim that audience.

Having the ability to select a strict, moderate, and off filter would be excellent. Also, the ability to not even show messages with curse words in them would also be awesome.

    Good idea.

It's definitely possible, just difficult. We have most of the backend ready for different levels of filters.

See ldr's post, it kinda sorts this out: to summarise, it doesn't get advertised.

For an example, i was talking to a player while helping him out and all i said was "Don't make your buildings boxy" It said it was swearing. The filter can be a bit to OVERLY exact.

I don't get why people censors to be removed so much. It's like caring if you leave the toilet seat up.

I like this idea, my idea would be that you can use a command and type in the words you don't want to be seen, so that if someone types something in you don't have to see it, like a player controlled swear filter.

A filter for "on", "off", or "moderate" to allow players to see and or freely type swear words is an unbelievably dumb waste of time. First of all it's completely unrealistic. Who is honestly going to leave that filter on if they knew about it to begin with? Every teenager curses! Virtually every kid wants to know curse words. There are few young people on this planet who are 'afraid' of seeing or knowing curse words. I mean, let's be honest here, the only time someone's going to turn the 'potty mouth' filter on is if they don't want their parents to see all the bad words on their screen.

Second, why is there even this presumed need to allow players to see cursing on screen through a mechanic proposed in this topic? Is your gaming experience really determined that much by how freely you may see swear words and type them in the chat? Or by how much the curse words are blotted out? To me, it's really sad that the fact that the filtering of swear words in chat is being labeled as a 'problem'.

Admittedly, I'm not a big fan of the filter because it's only so effective - and does need to be fixed in some ways - but I agree with @KingBrawl and @Shawn_ , allowing for a mechanic that allows you to see cursing and to do so freely isn't necessary. I swear from time to time and are tempted to multiple times in game but I don't have any desire to see the return of the plethora of random cursing and sexual innuendos to the in game chat.
