Let me start off by saying that the Internet and my parents do not collide well. I pretty much manage myself, but when it comes to online things they have rules, my mother especially.

For months, I've been using skype without my parents knowing. Skype is a way for me to let loose and have fun with people I enjoy talking to, and it allows me to connect to people around the world. I look forward to coming home and talking to people, and am then hit with the reality that I can't.

Anyone who has actually talked with me can vouch that I'm available on skype for about 10 minutes a week if I'm lucky. I live in a busy household, and am forced to use skype only when home alone.

What they don't realize is that I understand the dangers of the Internet more than they do, and 40 year old pedofiles don't play minecraft.

I've been contemplating ways to bring up the idea of skype to them, but I'm not sure how.

    Questions:

If you have ever been in this situation, how did you convince your parents?

How would you go about asking your internet-freak parents to allow you to use skype?

What are some arguments I could bring up supporting my side?

Bring up that it's free and high quality. Cheaper than calling or texting people.

Voice changers are never too good to mask a 40 year old's behind that of a teenager, so it's safe when you hear someone's voice and you can tell who's talking.

If you think that 40 year old paedophiles are the only dangers on the internet than no you don't know more than they do. However just going out at random and using would be better than asking i guess. If they ask say you are talking to friends...

I was just giving an example, I know that is by far not the only danger.

I wouldn't be lying if I said I was talking to friends, but I'd rather just have them know and be cool with it. If that was my only reason they'd just tell me to use my phone :L

Well my dad found out and broke my mic. So what I did is I went [10 months later] and asked him when he was in a good mood. Tell them that they are your age. And don't mention voice changers.

The way I made them overcome their false idealizations was I brushed up and studied regarding what I was doing.
Years ago, my Father would claim a disk defrag would clear everything.
    Now I manage our network.

Say it's free, cheaper, tell them that parents have no idea about the Internet and that you are responsible. Tell them that everybody there is like younger than you and tell them that the interface allows you to control what you can hear. Tell them that MANY people in school do it and that the teachers tell you that it is good for building communication skills while playing a video game.

And finally if they don't listen then threaten them.
    Jk don't do that.

Honestly if i was a parent i would tell my kid to make real friends instead of talking to random minecraft players on the internet, i get that they are dumb and think ur talking to older people but either way imo its kinda dumb
To solve ur problem just say they are people from ur school or you're real life friend's friend that lives nearby

    Here's what i did.
I asked my parents if I could get it, and explained what it is. Then before they could answer I said. "I am growing up and need to try to hold my own a bit more. As well as learn to be safer on the Internet, where there is no better way than trial and error." They agreed that I was old enough, and that I needed to have some freedom to make good judgements.
    Voilà

^ for once nicolecapepsi isn't wrong. When my parent's where skeptical about me using skype, I convinced them by telling them that it's free and that I'm talking to people from my school.

Your parents let you get skype at 12 y/o?

    You're lucky.
