I have experienced in multiple game modes (DayZ especially), that the chat tends to get in the way of the players vision and in a way force players to read everyones chats, whether verbal abuse of conversations etc. As a suggestion, I believe it would be in everyones interest to have a chat network set up for certain larger scale game modes. I have witnessed this through a similar game mode to DayZ on a different server called MineZ. Holding a specific item in a specific slot would allow you to chat on that network. This would go along still having the /msg active, meaning this would only be for the public chat.

If you don't want to see the chat you can either make it transparent or minimize it like I have done

I recommend you make it transparent as mentioned above, or just minimize it all together. Its really the easiest way to avoid the distraction.

How exactly do you do that in-game?

It's in your mine craft settings, I think it's "chat settings" if I recall correctly.

You can also just press f1 so you don't have to go into the options every time you might want/need to bring the chat back up.

Note: pressing f1 also makes the user interface go away and you have to press f1 to bring it back.
