This guide will help you understand what food to eat at what time.

    Cookie -

The cookie gives you 1 hunger bar per cookie.

You should use this if you have 9 hunger bars and are trying to regenerate quickly.

    Apple -
    Apple2.png
The apple gives you 2 hunger bars.
    Hungertoo.png Hungertoo.png
You should use this when you are not in a battle, trying to regenerate. Just trying to allow you to sprint.

    Steak -

The steak gives you 4 hunger bars.

This is good to use in intense spots, or when you accidentally have been using up all your hunger. :V

    Mushroom Stew -
    Mushroomsoup.png

The Mushroom Stew is good, it give you 3 and a half hunger bars.

While it gives you 6 hunger bars it also gives you regeneration. So, this is use well in very intense battles.
They aren't in every map though.

    Golden Apples -

The golden apple is very useful, similar to Mushroom Stew. It gives you 2 hunger bars.

Like the Stew, it also gives you regeneration, but on top of that, 2 extra hearts.

    God Apple -

This is pretty self explanatory, it will give you 2 hunger bars. It makes you not be able to die. Except, when you get knocked off. That is how OP it is.

These are the only food items that can be found in chests.
There are also some other craftable items.

Soon, I will be posting a guide on potions!

Sorry some of the pictures don't come up in the right spots.

Mushroom stew gives you 3 and a half hunger bars.

Golden Apple and Notch Apple fill up 2 hunger bars, not 4 or none.

    2 Hunger bars each.

    http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Mushroom_stew
3 Hunger bars (3 and a half on PvP Survival and Skywars because of the soup plugin).
Mushroom stews also don't give you regeneration, they heal up to 3 and a half hearts if your health bar isn't full. Only if you healt bar is full they will fill up your hunger bar.

It might be worth noting saturation values on the food. For example, you won't start losing hunger for a while if you eat a steak. But if you eat a cookie, about 12 seconds later, you'll start getting hungry.

That being said, this is a pretty nice and clear guide to when you should eat what.
