Don't make the mistakes I made failing multiple classes, skipping and not taking advance placement classes.

    You guys will be fine.

Chillax...I filled out the college application on the way from the airport when going to a Pac12 school which they didn't look at.

They looked at my grades and said you are in Evil Genius. Boom! Done.

The first test date of the new SAT was today. From experience, all I can say is prepare to sit for long hours and 4 pencils. Hardest parts are the math (they buffed the math part) and the essay (buffed even harder).

Wise words from a wise man...
OK, enough of the obligatory praising of the almighty lord and saviour.
All I did was learn the important stuff and just make sure I can get over 70% on a test (50% in the case of math, cuz math is hard). The fact that I set a low bar for the tests does definitely mean that I can always beat them, fortunately (I never failed those bars I set oh so many years ago).

Regarding #4: Check the colleges you are wanting to attend (even as a freshman) and see what they require for foreign language. Take the bare minimum unless you actually have a desire to learn or use the language.

If you are offered an AP test, see if you need the credits for college and take it. Nothing is more frustrating than taking the same course in college that you did in high school.

Don't go too overboard with being in honor's clubs and classes. Unless these actually give you an edge in your college application, don't worry about it. It's just a lot more stress for something that isn't exactly worth it.

Remember that employers want to see that you have the experience in the field, your degree is just there as a qualification.

Don't bother with AP. It's a ponzi scheme.

Disagree, I wish my school had AP classes. Starting off college as a freshman with 0 credit hours blows.

I wish that schools would stop having all these ridiculous AP classes that take away resources that could be spent actually teaching the material instead of teaching the tests while continuing to fatten the pockets of the College Board so they can burn more money designing more and more tests and making more books to prepare students for those tests.

It makes zero sense to me that in America today we have two levels of the same class which are completely different in their qualitative qualities, how well they teach their respective material. The advanced level and the normal level where the advanced (AP) level tends to cost more money (in exchange for a supposedly better education), whereas the normal classes tend to be pretty terrible. This creates unnecessary social divisions in schools (I know because I have experienced it. The AP snob is real), puts people who can't afford to take AP or are otherwise unable to take AP classes at a ridiculous disadvantage, and more often than not does not really reward people who go to the effort to pass the class and take the AP test. Almost no one becomes an AP scholar! And to do that you have to expend so much time, energy, money, and your soul that the few college credits and moneys that you do get from it all is not one bit worth it, which is why AP is a ponzi scheme. You could know U.S. History almost back to front and not do that great on the AP test simply because the good folks at the College Board decided to change things up and quiz you on some obscure section of history (which they have done). It is obscene to design class course material around the whims of an independent enterprise like the College Board.

What would be nice is if we could get the government and most large conglomerates (like the College Board) out of education and let the teachers actually teach the material, not some test that most students will not get much of a reward out of.

(p.s. love the new avatar putty)

You don't need AP classes but they do help.

Here are some things I could recommend.

    1) Understand how much college, room, tuition, and living expenses are before choosing the school.

    2) Understand the debt to income ration of the degree you are choosing. If you are choosing an engineering school then your income after college is more than say someone with a liberal arts or music degree.

    3) Make your decisions similar to a business decision. How much debt are you prepared to take on, how much will your parents help you with, and how much can you qualify financial aid ?

    4) One of the most important factors is making sure you have a great support system, like friends, or family. I know a lot of people that dropped out because they didn't have their parents and they got home sick. Have a support system to help you.

    5) Make a business plan for what you want to do after college. When do you want to buy a house? This type of strategic thinking will help you plan for the future. Make your business plan before you go to college. What do you want your life to look like when you get done with college?

As a person who takes 2 AP courses in high school right now, I don't know how I'm still holding up.
