Hey guys! So lately I've been very... lonely? Sad? I don't really know actually. I've been lackadaisical in my attempts to socialize and as such I've noticed a distinct change in my sleeping schedule. I am constantly tired, but I'm scared to sleep. Again, I don't know why, but I feel like part of it has to do with feeling behind the 8ball. I would really like to be at the top of my class for my computer science classes. I begin them next semester, however I find that computers don't come naturally to me like they do to others. I believe feeling useless and unexemplary has taken its toll and I've lately only been getting 2 to 3 hours of sleep each night. Of course, I could just take sleeping pills or other medicines, but I would like to get a real night's sleep without artificial help; if that's possible of course. So here's my question: Do you guys know any good methods for getting to bed and not being afraid to sleep?

Sleep in a colder room, and having a fan right next to you could help with that?
And/or exposed feet outside of a blanket could also help

Sleeping in a colder room and having your feet exposed are apparently proven by science I don't know for sure, I haven't bothered to read the articles about them ahaha and they have helped me sleep before

Hope you get some sleep! :grinning:

I was going to ask that question as well, I have a huge series of major tests and stuff coming up, and I was kinda stressing quite a bit :V

Well if you do spend a lot of times playing video games that could be a huge factor. I don't have any problems sleeping but lately I have noticed an increase in how much I've been playing and it is definitely making me more tired during the day.

I'm not sure how your play schedule works or if playing a lot of vide games is even the problem, but if it is I would suggest getting off an hour or even 2 before going to bed because video games are very stimulating and can give you trouble sleeping if you go to bed right after playing.

But if the problem is just being 'afraid of going asleep and not being able to sleep' then I would just play some chill music go to bed early and lay there till I fall asleep and make this a routine till it feels normal.

Personally I wouldn't take any pills just because I don't believe you need a pill for everything. You're still young and if you're having sleeping problems now it's probably some type of external environmental factor and shouldn't be hard to fix. Now this is just what I think but I'm not a doctor, so good luck and hopefully, goodnight :stuck_out_tongue:

I don't know if you've already tried this method, but I listen to nature sounds when I'm sleeping. For three years I've been listening to nature sounds, and I guess I can't sleep that well without a sound, such as a fan running, or even an air conditioner. Heck, I used to listen to laundry while I was sleeping, as it was right next to my room. But in all seriousness, I do recommend listening to nature sounds if you haven't tried already!

Hope you find something that will help you to sleep better soon!

Yes. I listen to rainstorms and they help me a lot, but I still don't actually want to go to bed until late in the night.

I am bipolar, ADHD, and ADD. I'm also an insomniac. I go into a manic state of mind that is unavoidable unless I am heavily medicated. So, I've had my fair share of figuring out methods for falling asleep...

One way that I am able to calm my alter state of mind is to listen to insane music, that makes me feel great, or like I can do anything. Any type of music works, but by doing it this way, personally, I am able to relieve some of my insanity.

A second way to go to sleep for me is to commentate everything that I do. It helps me realize what is going on, and frankly, I like to commentate everything so it helps me as well.

A third way that I personally am able to fall asleep is to clean my entire house, or do some sort of very tiring project: coding a game in less than 30 minutes, doing 8,000 jumping jacks, re learning modern physics, doing advanced chemistry problems without the use of any materials. After doing things like these, I can get a bit tired, and then I'm able to fall asleep better.

However, I am completely able to fall asleep if I'm medicated. This is only when I'm not medicated.

PS: I'm not saying anything about you personally, I don't know if you have the same mental instability, it's none of my business and I'm also not saying that you do at all. I'm just explaining that I, personally have these problems and I have had to find ways to figure out how to deal with them.

    Thanks,
    UVJ (Gtac)

Just count to 100 and you wild eventually fall asleep. It's pretty easy, in like 5 mins you're out.

PS - If you're depressed you should message me js.

Playing video games or watching tv right before you go to bed makes it harder for you to sleep. The best advice I can give regarding sleep is to get some physical exercise. It works like magic because you actually feel tired once your bedtime comes around. :v If you're like me and you spend your day sitting behind a screen doing schoolwork and playing videogames, or otherwise not getting up and moving, this could help you. Exercise actually energizes you and makes you feel less sluggish during the daytime. (Note that you will be physically tired after the workout, but you will feel energized afterwards unless you overdid it. This works best when already in a routine as it can take some getting used to at first. Once you are in the swing of things however, you definitely start feeling the helpful effects of being energized.) What makes me think that exercise could benefit you even more is that exercise releases endorphins. Endorphins are a sort of "happy drug/hormone," which makes me think that it will be useful to you fighting whatever negative feelings you are struggling with. I would recommend cardio workouts, easier ones if you aren't used to getting your heartrate up. If you are interested, I can link you to a free website that has a bunch of really great workouts. As a bonus, the instructors aren't freaks of nature. :v Also, healthy food goes hand in hand with exercise, and eating junk all the time generally makes for an unstable emotional life. Hope this helps m8.

I do arobics by doing those dumb dance routine things in my living room when no one else is home. XD I get self conscious but I love to dance like a maniac sometimes. I also eat healthy, but yea the video games are killing me. I'm just afraid to fall asleep because I feel like I haven't accomplished anything. But at the same time, I don't have the motivation to do anything. I'm stuck in a cycle of school, home, video games, occasional work, then sleep.

If things are not going well for you, it's great that you're talking to people about it. You might even want to talk to someone more about it if you feel like it. I always talk to my parents about it, but I'm guessing once you get into college or even out of college you won't be able to contact your parents as much in most cases.

Not going to lie I feel like this a lot too. Other than the ocational party and chilling with my friends I'm not the most social person. It sucks but only you can change it. I have my ups and downs but usually exercise and productive activities like chores and homework makes me feel better.

Keep a schedule/specific time you're going to sleep. You need 8 hours of sleep, so figure out how you're going to get that number. Don't roll over or move too much when you're sleeping. Be comfortable sleeping (some people like pjs, I like sleeping in my boxers). Get a good pillow, like a memory foam pillow, helps your neck and feels like you're sleeping on Kim Kardashian's ass.

It also seems part of your problem relies on yourself. Computers don't come naturally to you? You think people are born computer ready? Get that thinking off, it's just damaging yourself. I produce music, and not that long ago I could barely make a beat (still can't finish a song :v). I still suck at it, but not that much as I used to. I know some people who would quit after their first try. Some kids just have talent when it comes to producing music, but do you think they got that talent overnight? (unless they're singers or dancers, that's a different thing, but even then that doesn't mean those not born with it can't compete.) Those kids in your computer science class probably have spent countless of hours practicing, breaking, messing up, failing constantly, and what you're seeing is only one side of the story.

Let me tell you something, if you think you can't do it and you've already tried enough, you haven't done half the effort. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. I constantly have friends having anxiety over thinking their essay is not good enough, they don't turn it in because they think about it too much. I want a good grade too as much as them, but I give my effort and complete my essays. Who gets the better chance of making a shot? I get a bad grade, not what I was expecting, but at least I learned from my mistakes as opposed to those that didn't turn in their essay, and didn't learn anything new. Another example. I'm a total noob at basketball, and in gym class I'm playing with friends who play recreationally and a few who suck as much as I do. Competing with them does not put me down, I've grown to the mentality that "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take". I'll shoot from whatever place I got if there's no other choice, I hit the rim 80% of the time, but I'm pushing myself better than the ones that don't even take a shot.

I don't want to sound preachy, but you just gotta believe in yourself. Don't be afraid of failing, you are not perfect, neither am I. Don't understand something? Ask the teacher, google it, ask on reddit. Go the extra mile. People don't succeed because we don't go the extra mile. Find a goal in your life, ultimate goal, and work on it. Set daily small goals everyday. Need help working on those goals? Literally Shia Labeouf "Just do it!". There's nothing stopping you from completing those goals but yourself.

I hope u like reading. Often times reading a book, like a physical book with pages, will make you feel tired eventually.

Also, sounds like you'd be very stressed. Idk if you're a spa person, but a massage or spa day or something could help you relax a bit cx And just know that you don't REALLY have to be top in your class :L there's always someone smarter or someone who has it come more naturally to them. Just do your best, ask for help from the teacher or even from someone here (there's loads of computer science kids here).

There's also a breathing technique where you breathe in 5 seconds, hold it for 7, then breathe out 8 seconds. You kinda have to let your body relax tho. It's easy to stay tense but just try and let your muscles un-tense a bit then it should be easier.
