Now, I know what you are thinking, "Not another thread about how abooosive the sheriffs are and how they are so corrupt, etc."

I promise, that's not what I'm going to talk about here.

In the real Wild West, sheriffs were actually very corrupt. In fact, the entire system of law in the West was corrupt. Sheriffs were bribed by criminals, horse thieves, cattle thieves, etc. The sheriffs would either let these criminals walk, or refuse to arrest them in the first place. This led to the practice of lynching; average citizens taking the law into their own hands and hanging these criminals because the sheriffs wouldn't even arrest them.

I get annoyed about how many threads are made complaining about the sheriffs in this game when almost all of them are doing a great job. I have never met an abusive sheriff in all my wildwest experience. Maybe I'm just lucky, or maybe there just are hardly any of them. I think its the latter, and I'm sure many other players think the same.

So next time you go crying to your mother about abusive sheriffs, think to yourself, "maybe they are actually doing their role play rank the right way, and acting like sheriffs in the real Wild West."

The first rule is to not get caught.

The second rule is not get arrested...

I agree that this is minecraft, not real life, and shouldn't be taken too seriously. However, this post was meant to introduce a new perspective to those of our community who need help managing their unjustified anger against sheriffs. Maybe if those people (not mentioning any names) thought for a second that the sheriffs this system was modeled after were corrupt and self serving (as almost all humans are. Well, maybe not corrupt, but diffidently self serving), maybe, just maybe, they would think before filling the chat with their rants.

As to your point on the sheriff handbook, I agree that the sheriffs should follow the rules that were set out for them. However, the sheriffs are just teenage humans, and teenage humans break rules (whether on purpose or accidentally). I feel that instead of screaming abuse every time a sheriff does something questionable, us normal players should give them the benefit of the doubt.

No they weren't. You are thinking of Al Capone and his gang, and how he took over Chicago. The sheriffs in the west however were very aggressive, and most of them were southerners. (in which they just lost a war to the union which most southerners didn't like) Though they did camp at towns, waiting for a call.

Well you were explaining about lynching and stuff, maybe it should be like if you have like a bounty over like a certain amount of a bounty or was arrested more than a certain number of times, then there is a option for a sheriff to send to jail, make them pay, or actually hang them. Where then it says in chat, "*name* Is getting lynched" And you can do /lynch spectate 1 or 2 then you can watch the person get hanged. After that you just get teleported back to where you were standing.

nonono, this was not a suggestion :grinning:. It was just a history lesson for our not-so-educated members lol. although, now that I think of it, there could be some kinda option for regular players to gang up on a rogue and lynch him. Not quite sure how that would work though.

@iEBKN most sheriffs in the west were bribed by gangs, not just in the Al Capone instance. This is a commonly known history fact. While there were honest sheriffs, completely honest sheriffs were few and far between. The law and order in the wast was mainly held up by regular citizens through lynching and other methods. 1 sheriff cannot take down an entire gang, which is why he would need the help of the other civilians.

I learnt about him, in history just yesterday. He did bribe cops but when he got arrested. He didn't get charged for murder or illegal trade of alcohol but tax.
But during that time (1920), it's not really the Wild West since cities were more developed and such. Or my history teacher cut us slack.

@iMacro you are right. Thats part of the point I was trying to make to @iEBKN. The Al Capone instance was not really what I was getting at. I was talking about the wild west before the cities made it there; the wild west of cattle ranches and small towns, of gangs and sheriffs.

You little mind reader you. When I saw this title I was like, "lol, let the games begin." But nope, not that kind of thread. :L I wonder if abusive sheriffs will ever become permissible... probably not. :v

It probably won't ever become ok to abuse the sheriff role, but I was just introducing a perspective, not saying it was a good thing or that it should be a server idea. Glad someone liked my mind reading tactics :stuck_out_tongue:

Legal (According to all rules I can find) Sheriff Corruption:

    Donor-only Method (requires Renaming Horse):
Rename Horse (ie "Not Dsaw's Horse"). Fill Horse with Drugs. Unlock Horse. Leave Horse in Sheriff's House, for Sheriff to find 64*2*#ofStacks Legal Profit. As long as your horse is Renamed, and in a town, pretty much all they can do is remove the Illegal drugs, they can't trace it back to you, and they can't kill or otherwise affect the horse (make sure its in a room, not able to be Ridden out of Town).

    Free-2-play method (Haven't confirmed):
Walk into Sheriff's House. Drop drugs on the floor. /msg Sheriff "Hey I left some drugs on your floor, free money!"

Since Sheriff's get money for unprocessed drugs, and its quite simple to gather unprocessed drugs, this is a fast way to give a sheriff a few K without anyone getting in trouble.
