I've noticed ore possibly goes through a transition process from coal to iron, gold, diamond, emerald, and back to coal again. What I would like to know is, how long does that take? What's the time lapse?

Could you please explain what you mean with "transition process"?

I think he means how long it takes to process ores.

What I think he mean is possibly the prison ores or possibly the ores in the mines. What is the time for the ore to transition to the next tier after its been mined (coal to iron/iron to gold/gold to diamond/diamond to emerald). I think that's what he means although this is just my guess.

Your right, but not just when it's been mined, but also when the ore is left alone.
For example, when you first enter a mine and see a patch of coal ore. You decide not to mine it and go deeper into the mine. You then come back to that same patch and notice it's turned into gold, diamond, and emerald ores.
Back to what I originally stated, it probably went through a transition process from coal to iron to gold to diamond to emerald.
What I would like to know is, how long does that take?

Not at all how mines work.

Ores only change type when they have been mined. This is why after someone has run through a mine (or jail) you will see mostly cheap ores left. If you mine the ore, it has a chance to respawn as any ore.

Daswemd is correct. Upon mining an ore, it will turn to cobblestone. in around 5 minutes, the ore will 'respawn' as any ore, and I believe higher ores have a slightly lower chance of spawning than lower ores although I havn't seen the code so can't give specifics - that's the jist of it though.

    0,05 Emerald
    0,1 Diamond
    0,15 Gold
    0,25 Iron
    0,45 Coal

Ores only change when mined, the rarity of the different ores is listed above.

I'm not going to do a great job of explaining this, but I'll try.

When I mine, I first sneak through and scout the entire mine for danger. Seeing as though nowadays rogue makes you a target visible to everyone's compass as well as able to be arrested, I don't suggest fighting anyone if you don't have to. Work on your PvP and gun skills (I suggest a pistol for mining so you can have the advantage when it comes to fighting people in mines, most of which are just wearing a tunic and wielding a dagger) so you can handle yourself in combat situations if necessary. If you see someone while sneaking, you can either call out to them asking if they're friendly, or kill them. I prefer the former simply because it doesn't make me rogue and gives no bounty. When people who have said that they're "friendly" are in the mine with you, go to a different region of the mine, and enforce the policy of "if you come within 20 blocks of me, I'm going to kill you." That statement has prevented people from thinking that I don't suspect they'll betray me.

As for the mining specifically, find a section of the mine to stay in. Mine all of the ores in that section you've picked (a "section" I typically use is the entire left side of the bottom of the decker mine), even the coal. You mine the coal because, although this is based in anecdotal evidence, and I have no facts to prove this, it seems that when you mine coal, it comes back as something better such as diamond. Mine till your pick or picks all break.

If I'm particularly wary of danger, I'll call a mule or horse as I stand in a corner of the mine sneaking. I'll store my ores on the mule and send it back to stable so that I'm not risking losing all of it when I'm leaving.

Remember, you should be sneaking ALWAYS when you're basically anywhere outside of towns. It takes a bit more time to never unsneak, but it'll keep you alive. Always check around the corner before mining those rocks in front of you. Keep tying in chat to a minimum (preferably zero) so that you're not visible and vulnerable. Have buddies go with you and mine in different parts so as to protect each other.

You did a great job explaining! :finger: BTW, what's your favorite mine to go to?

Rosebud has a lot of ores (1600 blocks from Shaniko). Rawhide is empty for me even when there's 70 people online. Decker is 900 blocks from a town.

After I got much better at Wild West in terms of both combat and strategy, I would go to Decker mine despite the rogues. I take a blunderbuss or volcanic pistol for defense usually (most people at mines are unarmed aside from daggers). I stay at the bottom of the mine (the place with the two ladders) because I can see anyone going down the ladders since you HAVE to unsneak to be able to descend. I check for people after literally every ore I mine to stay safe. I stay in the left half (the left if you're looking down into the mine from the top of the ladders), but that's kinda arbitrary. The right side has good cover spots too. The left has this raised area I spend a lot of time in because it has good cover (you can use 3rd person to hide behind the stone wall and spy on people if you'd like), lots of ores, and you have to do a little bit of jumping to get on there, so I can defend it easily if need be.

A good tip is to beware of people waiting at the top of the ladder to knock you off. Although rare, I've seen it happen a few times.

ahh @Dorfwag I remember mining with you once. Weren't we in the same clan together for a time? I agree with you tips; I prefer rosebud mine mostly because it has the best ores (idk why, but I think it does) and it isn't usually camped by rogues (which decker usually is). One tip I could give is to try to mine a little bit before and especially right after a reset for two reasons.
    1. All the ores will respawn, which allows you to just mine the good ores such as emerald, diamond, and gold and not have to mine coal
    2. Not many players will be on right after a reset, so it will be safer.

My tip is to find a spot where you will kind of be hidden by shadow when you log back in, then mine right away after the reset. I've done this plenty of times and it never fails to get me 5k+ ( I mine with an iron pickaxe)

Iron pickaxes are very fast, but I don't like paying 900G for them. The legal money making methods shouldn't cost that much; they're already slower.

I don't remember mining together, but I was in CROW for awhile then mysteriously got kicked, reinvited, then kicked again. Never got an explanation, so I started my own team.
