Note: I haven't spoke to a single higher-up staff member about this concept. This is purely and simply is me wanting to get some thoughts on an idea I'd really, really like Brawl to do. Think of this as a community member suggesting a gamemode, rather than a staff member proposing one.

This section is mainly for Brawlers who never had the opportunity to play Maze Runner. If you remember the gamemode well, you don't have to read this, but make sure you still remember the details of the game.

Maze Runner was a gamemode on McPvP, where a few teams would be put in a randomised maze, with a base each. The aim of the game was to be the last team standing, either by surviving the maze by defending your base, or killing other teams by hunting them, throughout the maze.

The base had minimal resources - it had two farms (one for growing wheat, one for keeping animals), a forest for wood, and a house. There was also a supply crate, which would get 3 items every day, each day lasting about 10 minutes. The maze was completely randomised and changed each game, so you would not be able to memorise it and remember the route from each base. In the maze were chests - these chests had loot which were better than the resources you could get from your base.

The day and night cycle had more significance than just the supply crate, however. At night, grievers would spawn in the maze - powerful mobs which were very hard to survive against unless you had good gear. As well as this, the doors would close at night, meaning anyone in your base would be safe until the morning. However, this means that you will be stuck out in the maze at night if you do not make it back to your base in time. It is possible to survive in the maze, but it is not very easy to do so. Also, at the start of every night, the maze is completely randomised again, so it is different than the day before.

There were a few extra things which made this game more interesting. Firstly, there was an area called the griever hole. This was the area where grievers would spawn - it was a large portal in the middle of the maze. Finding this meant finding other bases would be easier, and you could also go into the portal to fight the griever boss. This was an incredibly tricky boss fight which was never pulled off in a normal game. Even when people specifically went certain kits and did certain strategies to try and take it out, people struggled. However, if you did manage to beat this boss, you would win the game automatically.

Another feature was a pretty big one - the princess. Each team would have a princess, and they would need to care for her (protecting her, as she did not regenerate health, and keeping her hunger up). If her hunger was low, she would slowly start to lose health. Keeping the princess alive is a pretty big priority for a team, as if the princess dies, the rest of the team is killed at the same time. This led to a few different strategies - sometimes the whole team would camp in the base and keep the princess safe. Sometimes some team members would stay in the base and some would run out and hunt. Sometimes, the entire team would go out in the maze and take the princess with them. Players could move the princess by right clicking her to pick her up.

Arguably the biggest feature was the custom kits. There were a few preset kits for new players that could be chosen from, but they were very basic and there were only 3. Since Maze Runner was such a strategic game, you were able to customise your own kit to make it exactly the way you wanted it. You would get given 100 points and could chose a variety of perks - from perks which gave you potion effects, the ability to heal your princess, the ability to instantly grow trees and increasing the chances of getting certain items from loot chests are just a few of the abilities there were to offer.

Finally, after night 3, the doors to each base would not close. This means you would not be safe just sitting in your base - often you'd have to get good enough loot to defend the princess and stay safe against all the grievers, or you could build a smaller base or a tower to keep the princess safe. It was around this point that teams started to struggle, and shortly after, the game would end. Ultimately there was no time limit - games would last between 30 and 40 minutes usually, but some games would last over an hour.

I'm thinking Maze Runner would be a brilliant gamemode to bring back from McPvP. It had a reasonably big community with a very strong team scene, but most of them are unsatisfied with other attempts to bring back the gamemode, due to the server that acquired Maze Runner not knowing what made the gamemode popular. They removed stuff such as the custom kits, making the gamemode worse and eventually, dead. Its still playable, but rarely gets any players.

As well as this, its not seen anywhere else. Other than that dead remake on a nearly dead server, there are no other versions of Maze Runner similar to the one McPvP made. Its a unique, original gamemode with huge potential. It also does not require a huge skill curve - strategies will help you win, but they are in no way required for new players to learn. As it is a team gamemode, new players will quickly pick up strategies from experienced players on their team. And, as it doesn't have soup PvP, it is not likely to die alongside that genre of PvP.

    The Point Of This Thread

I want to know any thoughts, feedback or opinions that you have on Maze Runner. Ultimately, this is a passion project which I would love to eventually see on Brawl, but the chances of this is slim. Preferably, follow this format in your responses:

    Experience with Maze Runner:
Preferred Type of Servers (Gun gamemodes, mini-games, longer-style PvP gamemodes):
    Thoughts on Maze Runner:

Also, I understand Brawl is in no position to add even more gamemodes. I'm not interested in feedback regarding Brawl as a whole - whether or not you think a War update is more important than Maze Runner is irrelevant, as I'm making this thread to think of improvements to the gamemode itself. That way, when Brawl is in a position to add more gamemodes and if this idea is approved, all the plans would have already been done.

Final request: if you don't know what Maze Runner is and didn't read at least the final section, please don't respond. I value everyone's opinion, but only if you bother to read enough of the thread.

Experience with Maze Runner: Lots, I played shortly after the mode was released and was on a Maze team. I played in a good bit of matches and read up on the forums frequently.
Preferred Type of Servers (Gun gamemodes, mini-games, longer-style PvP gamemodes): Longer-style games are my favorite, I enjoyed siege and Maze primarily.
Thoughts on Maze Runner: Hands-down my favorite game on MC. Creative, great customization, and not too based on PvP, though it can help you. I loved the team aspect and how it felt like you really had to depend on one another. I loved the custom kits as well. Also, this gamemode never really got boring for me. It was the most fun I've had on minecraft and bringing this back would definitely bring my interest back to brawl and minecraft in general. I strongly support what you're doing, and I hope that you find great success in getting people to help. I didn't really find anything wrong with the game, although there were some bugs with 1.8. Also, further customization is always nice. Lastly, some of the abilities were a bit costly/OP, or the opposite.

I have played maze runner before and it was the best game mode on MCPVP in my humble opinion.
Preferred Type of Servers (Gun gamemodes, mini-games, longer-style PvP gamemodes):
    mini game
    Thoughts on Maze Runner:
If maze runner where to be added back as a game mode brawls average player count would be bumbed up with no doubt. I Really hope you can convince the higher ups to think about this. I would love to see maze runner back.

Experience with Maze Runner: I've played it on mcpvp a lot and enjoyed playing it
Preferred Type of Servers (Gun gamemodes, mini-games, longer-style PvP gamemodes): longer but mini games work too (liked how is was on mcpvp)
Thoughts on Maze Runner: It was a fun game and if brawl was to add it (if they can't now many in future), I'm sure they would attract a lot of players and make more money. Game was really fun and a lot of people have read books/seen movies and would have general knowledge about it too which isn't a bad thing

Experience with Maze Runner: I've played at least 10 matches on that game mode. I had fun playing it with my Raid/HG team beacause the game concept was really good. However hackers had such a big impact on that game mode.
Preferred Type of Servers (Gun gamemodes, mini-games, longer-style PvP gamemodes): longer-style PvP gamemodes.
Thoughts on Maze Runner: Maze Runner had a decent player base back in 2012/13 even though it wasn't that noobs friendly. But I believe hackers were the main reason of Maze not having such a good community as CTF or Sabotage. Hackers on this game mode were such a big deal. Because a single match could even last for 30 minutes and 90% of Maze Runner's aim was to kill players. That's also a reason why HG isn't that popular anymore.

I liked that game mode and the idea in general. But in my personal opinion, if Brawl had the chance of bringing back an old Mcpvp game mode it would have to be Sabotage.

Experience with Maze Runner: I would play it from time to time, few hours on end. I knew how it worked, kits included, so I would say I was experienced.
Preferred Type of Servers (Gun gamemodes, mini-games, longer-style PvP gamemodes):
Fast-paced PvP gamemode, although gun PvP is fun too (so basically a combo of everything lol)
    Thoughts on Maze Runner:
Since it's a bit of a long game (not letting me join, play. and leave as I wish like a fast-paced PvP gamemode), it was always a side server for me. Nevertheless, I really, really enjoyed playing it (esp. with friends) for its uniqueness and challenge.

Experience with Maze Runner: played casually back on mcpvp
Preferred Type of Servers (Gun gamemodes, mini-games, longer-style PvP gamemodes): minigames/creative
Thoughts on Maze Runner: as a competitive gamemode, MR was fantastic, but it was pretty bad at attracting/retaining new players - which should be a priority imo. A few reasons for this:

    - games were long and required your full attention
    - protecting the Princess was boring

That said, for a PvP gamemode it had a great community - random teams meant that everyone was inclined to be friendly and work together, and the class ideas forum was very active. The griever hole was also a lot of fun and was VERY well-balanced.

+1 overall but it could use some slight tweaks

Experience with Maze Runner: I played it when it first came out, stopped for a bit, then TTTT became a thing and I played it more.
Preferred Type of Servers (Gun gamemodes, mini-games, longer-style PvP gamemodes): PvP
Thoughts on Maze Runner: Maze is a great game that involves teamwork, strategy, game knowledge, and PvP skill, making it a very challenging game to play but still fun. There wasn't much to the game to learn, and was pretty self explanatory, but having no idea what to do was very punishing as well. IMO the lack of Maze players was due to the game being hard to learn especially when your teammates do not cooperate, which results in not being noob friendly. However, Maze is so fun when you play with friends, I remember practicing with the team and even though I was just the cultivator I had a lot of fun. When you play with friends and are committed to learning, it becomes much more enjoyable to play. Once you learn how to play and learn strategies, you can try play solo (aka use Vampiric) and imo playing solo is much more fun.

TTTT figured it out, but only a few of us knew how (I never knew :frowning: )

    +1 PLEASE
Experience with Maze Runner: I played a bit on BBH's server, and it was the only reason I ever came back to it

Preferred Type of Servers (Gun gamemodes, mini-games, longer-style PvP gamemodes):
    Longer-Styler PvP

Thoughts on Maze Runner: I never saw Maze Runner in its hay-day, but the couple times I did play it, it was a blast. Hopefully it could bring back some of the McPvP players, and some new one. Its seems like a great game with many different styles to it, that sadly, I never experienced. The random gamemodes, like stated above, defeats some of the problems that games like WarZ and HG have of the same people dominating, and overall +1

Maze was without a doubt my fav game mode on MCPVP. To have this reborn, I would probably personally be the person who brings it backs slave. It's fast paced fun, you can hop in, requires skill. I would love to see this back on brawl, and if its the pre-BBH version, then Brawls player ratings would shoot through the roof.

i had a team called masters of maze (mom) which was later renamed to matsters of maze. it was very fun and i met a lot of my friends that i still talk to today that way. we were a successful team that kinda just started out as being a dumb little meme thing that grew into a small little community. the matches were always fun since it was only like four people and u could name ur kits whatever u wanted to.
Preferred Type of Servers (Gun gamemodes, mini-games, longer-style PvP gamemodes):
not guns lol uhhh whatever ctf maze & sab are classified as but im a sucker for mini games
    Thoughts on Maze Runner:
it was lit as **** lol

Experience with Maze Runner: Maze Runner was one of the last MCPVP games that I had felt real investment and fun in. It was the one gamemode that myself and my team (TTTT) were actually decent, as we were the first to discover how to kill the Griever Boss.
Preferred Type of Servers (Gun gamemodes, mini-games, longer-style PvP gamemodes): Dont really know what this means, but I do want to see a server actually try and use what 1.9 had to offer for combat.
Thoughts on Maze Runner: I really enjoyed Maze Runner up until the great paywall death of Maze. Before the paywall was added it was extremely fun, but had a learning curve that would shaft new players hard.

My biggest complain was the Griever Boss, it was advertised as a daunting monster that could only be defeated if you figured out the secret. It was a puzzle involving putting out fires in a specific order. During Maze's longevity if the method of killing the boss was public knowledge it would have made the game a race to the center. Unlike what you mentioned, killing the Boss could have been done solo in a normal game if people were skilled enough and used the right combination of kits.

Maze Runner can burn you out fast, as once you break the barrier of being a simple player and ascending to the heights of meta-game skill it's more a fact of understanding class combos and having enough class slots.

TL;DR: Customizable Classes were a 10/10 but nobody would actually pay $10 to use classes for a game that was far from polished. Griever Boss worst "Boss Fight"

Maze Runner was one of my FAVOURITE gamemodes on MCPVP. I played Maze Runner as a regular for a long period of time. I joined a Maze Runner team called Justified - we played in matches and a few tourneys. Maze Runner did help me create some friendships I wouldn't have made with other people and I will always remember the good times, I had on there. #NeverForgetZanderPanda18

Preferred Type of Servers (Gun gamemodes, mini-games, longer-style PvP gamemodes):
I don't really enjoy gun gamemodes. I like the idea possibly having a mini-games or a longer-style PVP gamemode.

    Thoughts on Maze Runner:
I think Maze Runner would be a great gamemode to have. It's also a simple concept so newer players won't get confused on what to do. I really liked the customization of the kits as well. :stuck_out_tongue:

Due to the fact you haven't spoken to a higher up about this gamemode means you are unaware of the situation:

Brawl will need to buy the domain. Currently the other half of McPvP owns the rights to Maze Runner. The development team would need to completely change the gamemode to host it legally.

Experience: Created the team system, worked closely with the moderators to improve it (some of them), and led one of the most powerful teams.

Preferred: Somewhere between mini-games and long-style

    Thoughts:
I loved MR, but it is to difficult to work with a team that you don't know. That's the problem with the gamemode, and why it hasn't been successful recently. Maybe changing up the amount of bases to 8, and having max 2 people per team would help. Other than this though, I loved the mechanics of the game and the different strategies.

I also was never really a fan of the kit customization. Made a really simple gamemode have a steep learning curve for new players.

If hclewk sold both the code and the rights, Munchy wouldn't have been allowed to copy HG from Brawl. That's just not how it works.

Anyways, I'll be reading through these responses tonight and will be posting a follow-up thread soonTM. Thanks for all the feedback.

Every Minecraft server is in a legal grey zone, you cant own the rights to something that you don't own to begin with. I don't know any instance where a Minecraft server has gotten another Minecraft server for copying their gamemode ideas. Hell, the title "Maze Runner" is just a cash grab to another property that nobody in Minecraft owns the rights to (Example: MCPVP's Hunger Games being renamed to Hardcore Games due to Lionsgate.)

There was a max runner event for PvP survival back on November 1st 2014. Maybe it should Ben added as a game mode instead of a rare instance event.
