So, I'll keep this as objective as possible. These elections are very important as anti-EU candidate's victory could end the union due to France withdrawing.

There are 4 primary candidates -

    A) Marine Le Pen (far-right candidate, her party is funded by Russia and in case of victory, France will withdraw from EU)

    B) Emmanuel Macron (centrist, independent, former economy minister and pro-business/pro-EU)

    C) Francois Fillon (conservative, pro-Russia, former PM and was recently hit with controversy, possibly making him withdraw)

    D) Jean-Luc Mélenchon (Far-left, anti-EU and anti-NATO, certain progressive policies)

These candidates are currently competing for the position, Macron and Le Pen will most likely take the first round, mainstream media predicts Macron's victory in the second round.

So, which candidate will win and why? Any thoughts, opinions or comments?

I'll update the thread as elections progress.

EDIT: John Oliver explains French presidential election.

Marine LePen because people are slowly realizing that the EU is a godawful group of unelected politicians who exist to self serve.

I really don't like the political right but I think that having one after another win political victories is just the swift kick in the arse that the left needs tbh.

What's exactly bad about EU? I mean, it's not perfect and has a lot of bureaucracy, but it has singlehandedly restored Eastern Europe and provided a lot of good deals for member states.

They're an unelected group of failed politicians that have excessive control over the goings-on in the member states, they limit the ability of member states to trade with the outside world.

They facilitated the unvetted mass immigration of refugees without any vote from the member states, and sent them into areas where they affect the poorest populace (by way of rioting) and not the richest people with the resources to actually put them up.

They work with NATO to facilitate a cold war against Russia by surrounding their border and have attempted in the past to build a standing EU military force that, again, would be under the orders of an unelected (and thus non-democratic) organization.

    To name a few.

Only the president is chosen by the party which receives the majority of votes in the EU parliament elections.

The only thing they control is monetary resources/European money and certain trade tariffs. Otherwise, they have very little say in a state's politics.

I don't understand how trade with outside world is limited. Hell, EU IS the biggest player on the global trading scene and remains a good region to do business with.

The refugees usually head to wealthier countries (Sweden, Denmark, etc.), their lower-class citizens are usually protected by certain laws and regulations, effectively nullifying the gap. Refugees almost never come to the Eastern European states due to low benefits.

I don't know if you use Russia Today as your source, but these claims about NATO are absolute nonsense. If anything, Russia invaded Ukraine, interfered in US and French presidential elections as well as spread lies/anti-western propaganda. Russia is being aggressive towards NATO, a defensive alliance.

I think placing units of NATO soldiers in border states is only rational, as Russia would have definitely invaded them without NATO presence. If anything, Russia has thousands of armored units, helicopters, nukes and planes along the border, yet it's not acceptable for poor Baltic States to have a few dozen American marines stationed in them!

EDIT: I don't think European Union will replace or compete with NATO.

The EU is nothing more than a tool for multinational corporations to control supposedly independent nation states.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Greece, one of the poorest states in the region, flooded with immigrants that it could in no way support?

    Nope.

    Nope.

Still nope (this one is particularly funny since its the West who primarily spreads lies and propaganda about literally everything so, under that logic, anti West propaganda would more or less be the truth).

    Russia is being aggressive?

You do realize Russia is surrounded by NATO countries and U.S. military bases right? Or that the U.S. literally has 5,000 troops on their border? Or that their economy is being wrecked by sanctions imposed by the Obama administration (devalued currency). You know, none of the things that are happening to the U.S.? Because I'm not sure that you do, unless you're one of those people who believes in "internal aggression" and "humanitarian war".

Oh so it was defensive warfare on our part? Good one.

Russia did not, not once, invade any of its border states after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. It only took defensive measures, as it did in Ukraine, Crimea, and Montenegro, because a military alliance (NATO) was/is creeping up on its borders in order to ensure U.S. hegemony and the delusional neocon dream of "full spectrum dominance".

Let me rephrase that ^^ for you: "preemptive war" - a line stolen directly from the Bush State Department.

    Here's a scenario for you:

If Mexico arbitrarily decided to send a battalion of troops, tanks, and mortars to the American border, without provocation (or based on trumped up lies like "Russian hacking"), who would you say was being aggressive? The Mexicans, who have put troops on our border, or the Americans?

That's the situation the Russians are dealing with right now.

On-topic: I'm comfortable with either Le Pen or Melenchon. Both have sensible economic plans but Melenchon doesn't have all that far right rubbish about oppressing minorities or tossing out immigrants because they're "not French". Plus he supports a 100% tax on the wealthy, which is both necessary and would do wonders for the economy.
