So my Gateway DX4850 that I'd found in an abandoned tailor in the middle of a woods has finally taken a dump. It overheats, glitches out by spewing random text, becomes unresponsive, and takes on a mind of its own. And after having the thing since 2008 I'm surprised that the prehistoric device still turns on. And I'll answer the question most people are probably asking: No. It never ran Minecraft at 30fps. Lower your standards to about 10-20fps.

Anyhow I don't feel like investing in fixing an outdated freebee PC. So I'm going to try and build a POOR man's PC. I currently have a few college geeks that are willing to help me out but I'll ask here for a few recommendations that I could swing by them. I'm looking to build something that can primarily be used to edit videos, run programs such as solidworks, and a side bonus would be games. Being expandable/upgradable is a necessity since I'll be pouring fat stacks of pennies into it once I graduate. I'll note that I'm custom building the case out of rustic steel, bolts, nuts, machine glass and a few sprinkles of overkill that'll tickle my fancy and squash any unfortunate people that may live in the floor below. So I won't need that added to the list of things I'll need.

Video editing, upgrade-ability and cheap doesn't really work together. Professional video editing along with 3D modeling is the most hardware-intensive task you can do on a PC. Upgrade-ability means spending additional money on parts that are too good for the current setup, meaning it won't be cheap.

To give any suggestions, you need to give us some info about your budget and the kind of games you want to play on it.

Also, I would really not suggest building the case yourself. You would risk killing expensive components with a short circuit and it is unlikely that you manage to build a case that exactly meets all standards: ATX mainboard, ATX power supply, 3.5" drive bays, IO panel, PCIe slots, 120 MM fan slots and so on.
Even if you did manage to build it, it would still lack stand-offs for the main board, fans and front IO.
In short: You can get a case for around $30, buy one of these.

I'm thinking my budget's going to be limited to about $1,000 witch I know is really squeezing the sponge. I'm not really particular on games since playing them's the last of my worry but if it were possible I'd like to get into the norms such as PUBG, Rocket League, and so on. Playing them at 4K wouldn't be necessary. The nail I'm really going to try hitting is editing and 3D modeling for work and spare time purposes. As for building the case I've got my hands on some fancy tools and machinery and I'll be modeling it off of my bud's beefy tower. I know the risks of building one and I'm willing to put in the extra time to make sure it reaches requirements. It'll cost extra but surely raise some eyebrows once it's finished.

I spent about 1.4k € on my PC in total (without mice etc.). Building your own case is actually very dangerous - wouldn't recommend as Roke said.
I can recommend getting a video card dedicated to what you want to do since using 1 card for OS, games, editing, rendering really kills the card. Just saying.

Another important question: $1000 for only the PC or including peripherals? Because if it is with peripherals it is indeed a tight budget, without it is decent.

    Here is a build for $990: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KpsKYr

    Upgrade-ability:
    - Can easily add another 8 GB RAM module
    - X370 board also works with Ryzen 7 and has an M.2 slot
    - Can add another RX580 for Crossfire
    - Power supply large enough to support Crossfire
    - SSD is rather small, can easily add another one

    Weaknesses:
    - the SSD will quickly fill up
    - the RAM might not be enough

I've gone through the list you'd made and every component appears to be promising in terms of performance. Or at least from what my lack of experience can tell. I'll run this by my buddies this weekend and see if they have anything else to add that my untrained eye may not notice. Huge thanks for your help. I'll tack on more ram and upgrade the SDD if the future calls for it but compared to my current setup of an Intel i3 530 cpu, 6 GB of DDR3 RAM, and the lack of a SSD and an external graphics card I'm sure it'll do me fine for quite a while.

GTX 1060 gpu, intel core i5 cpu = good performance on what your planning to do. And 8GB of ram isn't enough anymore, I'd suggest 16gb of ram now.

I'll extend the RAM if needed (possibly once iphone x hypes down and Christmas ends). And from what people are saying the 6 cores of the Ryzen 1600x hold up surprisingly well against the i5s. In many cases better.

16 GB of RAM is without a doubt better and likely needed, but the prices are astronomical right now. Two years ago you would have spent around $70 for it, today it costs $200.

Yeah, the RAM prices sent up like CRAZY. I tried to get a 8gb stick and it costed me about 65$
