    Death Note – A Revised Volume 7

K Y O S U K E… Light painstakingly wrote down the first part of the man’s name, the seconds passing by like hours as he did so. Just a few more letters he thought as he traced out the E and started on his last name I’m so close

H I… Light fought to keep himself from laughing as he wrote the second half of Higuchi’s name. The plan he had put in place six months ago… he couldn’t believe it was working out so well. Everything, from the moment of his incarceration to now had gone perfectly! He even got the death note from Ryuzaki – L. If there was anyone Light wouldn’t have expected to let him have it, it was L. But he just let him snatch it out of his fingers! Ha!

Light smirked as he glanced over at L; the man’s back was to him. He was so preoccupied with the Shinigami that he seemed to have forgotten about his copilot. No, who would worry about the poor, innocent, memoryless me? Light thought, but what you don’t know L, is that the real me, yes Kira - no GOD is back! Once again Light felt like laughing but somehow he suppressed it. No, I’ve almost won. I just need to kill Higuchi and Ryuzaki is finished… It won’t be long now he thought, looking at the pathetic figure of Higuchi outside, blindfolded and defeated. And to think this man was Kira. Light snorted, he was as much of a joke as Demegawa! Oh well. You were a useful distraction Higuchi. he thought Stupid, but useful. And now you’re going to die. Don’t worry, I’ll put you out of your misery soon enough…

    G U…

L sat in the pilot’s seat, in the peculiar posture that had become his trademark over the years, and watched. So this is it, he thought. Higuchi is Kira and captured, but is this really the end? As much as he wanted to believe that, L couldn’t. He watched as Higuchi, sweating and visibly shaken, was handcuffed and forced into the back of Chief Yagami’s police car, this man… he wasn’t Kira from the start. There were too many things that just didn’t add up.

Kira, the original Kira, only killed criminals. Not because their deaths benefited him or a particular corporation, as was the case with many of the present Kira’s killings, but because they were criminals. It was that simple. High minded idealism achieved by a violent, immoral means. Originally the killings had occurred at times which suggested that Kira was a student. Kira was simply killing whenever they had the time and opportunity. After all, L thought, who would risk being caught writing names in the middle of class?

But after L began investigating that possibility, Kira completely changed the timing and the nature of the killings, killing one criminal per hour, every hour. The more he thought about it, the more certain he was that it was a move made out of fear. Surely even Kira could see that by going out of his way to make it seem less likely that he was a student only increased the possibility that he was a student?

Two years had gone by and L was certain that Light Yagami, the son of Soichiro Yagami, honors student and future NPA officer, was Kira. But he couldn’t prove it. The last six months had only made things stranger. Not only had Light been helpful on the investigation but he was so genuine about his desire to capture Kira that L wasn’t sure if he was talking to the same person. His original theory was that Light and Misa were Kira and the second Kira and had coordinated their killings together up until their capture. After their confinement their powers simply passed to somebody else – Higuchi as it turned out.

Was that it? Did Light give his death note to Higuchi before he turned himself in? L stared at the Shinigami, or Rem as Higuchi had called it, and wondered. No… Light couldn’t have known the notebook would go to Higuchi. He was a greedy corporate executive at Yotsuba, which he doubted Light ever heard of let alone knew anyone there. Then what? If he didn’t know who the notebook would end up with how did it get to Higuchi, and who gave it to him? L’s eyes once again turned to the Shinigami. What is your part in this Rem?

L’s thought was broken as Chief Yagami’s voice came over the wireless, “Ryuzaki, we have Higuchi in the car. Should we take him to headquarters?”

“Yes, we can question him further there.” L said, and added as an afterthought, “Yagami-san, everyone, please do not remove your visors. Higuchi still has the eyes and we do not want to take any chances…”

    “Very well Ryuzaki.”

We do not want to take any chances? We?? If he was anywhere else Light would have been rolling with laughter. Here he was, moments away from killing Higuchi and L was talking about not taking any chances? You don’t have a clue do you Ryuzaki? Light thought, Higuchi may have the eyes, and he may be Kira… but Kira is powerless without a death note! A tiny smile played upon his face as he looked lovingly at the tiny scrap of paper he slipped in his watch all those months ago. However, even the tiniest scrap of the note is lethal, as Higuchi is about to find out…

    C …

“Watari, there is no need for that anymore.” L said, motioning to the sniper rifle, “Even if Higuchi escapes we are on the freeway and he will not get far…”

Watari nodded and climbed into the back of the helicopter. L banked the helicopter to the right and pressed a button on the dashboard, activating the headset microphone “Are you ready to move out Yagami-san?”
    “Yes.”

“Good, proceed down Highway 95 until we reach headquarters. Watari and I will meet you there and present our conclusions on this case.”

“What about the Shinigami?” Yagami asked, sounding slightly nervous.

L shrugged, “If the Shinigami has stayed with Higuchi this long, then they follow us to headquarters. It is my assumption that they are bound by the death note and will not leave until the owner is dead or ownership is transferred.”

    “Do you understand me Yagami-san?”

    “Yes, Ryuzaki.”

    “Then let’s go.”

Very good L, Light thought you figured that out pretty fast. But then again, you are L. Too bad you don’t have much time left or this could have gotten pretty interesting. He slowly traced out the H with the metal pin, ink dripping down his fingertips, as he entered the victim’s names into the computer. Damn pin kept slipping. Light would have written the name minutes ago if he had an actual writing utensil, but that would have been far too noticeable. No, there was no other way. One more letter… come on…

    You can do this!

A wail of sirens followed the dozen police cars as they raced down the interstate, with the helicopter following from above. L was pleasantly surprised to see the Shinigami flying behind, staying closest to Chief Yagami’s car in the front of the pack. So my assumption was correct he thought. The Shinigami is following Higuchi.

If the Shinigami owns the notebook and is only letting Higuchi use it while he’s alive or as long as he wants to, does the Shinigami also take possession of it when that is no longer the case? And if so, could the Shinigami move the notebook from place to place?

L thought about this a moment more before it hit him. If death notes are possessed by Shinigami, and if they only enter the world through Shinigami then they must be able to move notes wherever they, or the owner, wish. L smiled, that would explain how Light got the notebook to Higuchi. He had a Shinigami transport the notebook for him, not to Higuchi specifically, but someone like him. The Shinigami just happened to pick Higuchi. So that was your plan…

This deduction made L happy, for an instant. But his mood quickly faltered. Once again, all events pointed toward Light being Kira but he still couldn’t prove it.

L sighed. That was always the problem wasn’t it?

Light smiled as he, his hand quivering, scratched out the final letter on the note. He released the pin and looked at the name he had written

    KYOSUKE HIGUCHI

And then he glanced at his watch. It was exactly 8:42 PM. And 5, 10, 15, 20 seconds…

If the cause of death is not specified anyone with their name written in this note will die within 40 seconds. It had been 25 seconds. Higuchi would die in 24

    “Light-kun.”

L’s voice hit light like thunder. He had been silent for so long, lost in his own little world that Light hadn’t expected L to interrupt him, and certainly not now. What a nuisance Light thought as he closed the watch and focused on typing names into the computer. He could feel L’s eyes, black and searching, boring into the back of his head. Just relax, he doesn’t know I wrote Higuchi’s name. Just seventeen more seconds…

    “What is it Ryuzaki?”

“May I see the murder notebook?”

Light looked at L in surprise and then laughed, “But Ryuzaki, I’m not done checking the names. How can I enter names if you have the notebook?”

“That’s okay Light-kun.” L said, “You don’t need to check all of them. If some of them match up then that is enough.”

Damn it, he still suspects me. Light glared at L, before glancing back at the computer screen and then at the notebook. Not that it matters. I just need to stall for another 10 seconds...

    “Light-kun.”

    “What?”

“Will you give me the notebook or must I ask Watari to take it from you by force?”

Take it from me? He definitely still suspects me. Light thought, his agitation growing. If I give him the death note then I’ll lose all my memories. And if I lose my memories before Higuchi dies, will I still gain
ownership? Rem hadn’t been clear on that part, not that she would. Worthless Shinigami…
Light sighed, but the longer I keep the death note the more it makes me seem that I’m Kira. No I have to give him the notebook. There’s no reason for me to have it right now. Damn, how long has it been? 5 seconds? Three more seconds and Higuchi dies.

    “Watari –“

“I’m sorry Ryuzaki,” Light said, blushing slightly, “I was going to give it to you but some of these names are just really long!” He handed the death note to L. L took it wordlessly and placed it in his lap.

    0!

Rem I hope you were right… Light thought, as he slowly faded away.
