    Networking teim v:

    Topology:
You all have computers. You all use the internet. Most of you have an internet connection at home.
Whether it's wireless, or wired, you use something called a router to connect to the internet, whether it's provided by your ISP, or you provide it yourself.

That router is the gateway between your network at home, and the greater internet. That router has 2 IP addresses; the internal IP address that is your gateway (utilizing the private address space of 192.168, 10., or 172.16), and the public IP address that kids swear they're gonna DDOS. When you wanna use the internet, your packets will pass through your gateway. Provided you have options for ISPs, you can have two different internet subscriptions and have two different gateways, thus two different gateways. All your ****ty computers go through your router to access the internet.

Most of the time, your router will have an internal DHCP server, that'll give your computer an IP address so you can get to the internet without touching ****. This DHCP server will assign you an IP address, a DNS server, and a gateway. Changing your internal IP won't protect you from ****. Changing your DNS server won't protect you from ****, but you could always change it to Google's DNS server (8.8.8.8) and enjoy faster domain lookups :v, and unless you own multiple subscriptions to the internet, you won't have luck changing your gateway.

    Hardware:
Consumer-based routers. Bleh. The **** Bestbuy and your ISP force on you. They're really just hybrid routers/firewalls/switches w/ DHCP and some horrible firmware (software.) They do what they're supposed to do, which is allow you to connect multiple machines for networking. Not going to go into traditional routers, which are awesome when you know wtf you're doing. This, again, allows your LAN to connect to the WAN, or a different LAN. Your router will be limited by its hardware, and the configuration your IP has given you. (20Mbps, 50Mbps, 300Mbps, 1Gbps, etc)

Consumer-based switches. Meh. The **** Bestbuy offers. Normally referred to as dumb switches, 'cause they have absolutely no computing power to handle some of the better aspects of modern networking (**** I'm not going to go into here.) They allow multiple machines to communicate (provided the IP addresses of this LAN are using the same IP address range (or subnet, or if you've got some correctly setup routers, but again, that's beyond this ****.) An 8 port gigabit switch will allow 8 machines to send 8 gigabits and receive 8 gigabits all at once, for a total of 16 gigabits of throughput.

Hubs. **** you, noone uses hubs anymore. Unless you want a cheap method of monitoring your network. Really cheap. 'cause that **** sends packets it receives to EVERYONE it's connected to on the LAN. I C U browsing that porn site.

If you've got Google fiber, and a gigabit plan, your router/gateway will limit your upload and download to 1 gigabit. Connecting your switch to your router (provided they're separate, which they should be if they're traditional,) again, the router will be the limiting factor to your access to the WAN; 1Gbps.

    User (you):
Herpderpah muh 24 port router and muh nrton firewall will protect mehz and muh VPN that i dk how to setup derpahderpherp ddos peoplez NSA don't know **** muthufuggen crackaz. **** you. You know more **** than I did when I was your age, and you're a ****ing bint 'cause you're not continueing your ****ing studies in this kind of ****. You complacent POS, I ****ing hate you.
