"Special" items

I did see the thread, Glitch or hacked items, and I was going to add to it but I wanted to ask another question, and make sure it was answered. Could someone be banned for giving you "special" items that make your game either crash or completely laggy? I was on today, still am on, and this player, Rabbitboy4641, announced he had this "magic show." Of course, I was curious to see how such a thing was performed on Minecraft, and teleported to him. Immediately, everyone there was given nether stars renamed to have "IrIrIrIrIrIr." In a few short seconds, I realized, he had given me a special item that made my game lag out. The only way to close the window was to press the windows key on my keyboard. I was able to get a screenshot (not by print screen, it wouldn't work when logged in the server) although I had to edit and brighten it up to see clearly.

This is just a close-up of it. This is not the first time that happened before. Before, I got one of my buddies to join and ask a moderator or someone with the power to clear my inventory so I could play again. It worked, only now, my only available friends are stuck here with me, and I would like to see if the three of us, Waywardnugge, Saintmassacre1 and I could have our inventories cleared to play the game again. It's very well appreciated.
