What bug is this?

    Hello everyone, today I was visiting my neighbor when I went to go let her dog inside. I saw this bee laying on the rail of her patio. It was orange, so I didn't know what it was. My first guess was that it was an Asian Giant Hornet.

    I noticed in the photo it looks like it's eating the wood.

    NOTE: I live in Michigan, United States.
    EDIT: I plan on taking it to a science teacher/bug specialist at my school Monday.
