Travel far out from spawn and make your base hidden, (preferably in the nether). After you have that done, I'd suggest gathering tons of resources to PvP (armor, swords, soups, pots, etc.) Now you're ready to PvP, if you need help PvPing, I'd suggest checking out a kitpvp server and the guides on the forums.

 

Gather just enough raw pork chop to just run away from spawn a good way's. Then once you get a good way's from spawn set a personal warp just Incase you die that way you don't have too re-travel. Then start to make your base and gather supplies as @Chopo101 said. Also yes practice on your Pvp skill's If your wish Is to kill other PvPer's.

 

As both of these players have said, travel far from spawn and set up a well-hidden base. From then on I would grind, maybe set up some farms or mob grinders and mine your butt off to make as many sets of armor as possible. Gather some soups and PvP to increase wealth, maybe set up a tracker, and you're good to go!

 

Here are steps to survive:
1. hack brawl
2. Move pvpguns+ to survival pvp
3. Give yourself 1 MiniFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN
4. Wreck
5. Laugh as people complain.

Or just be OP with a wood sword. Only person I've 1v1ed and been beat by is cuddles. (Thanks lag).

Basically you need to get in spawn, and do /random to get far from spawn. Then from there, you need to run much further to assure you won't get raided as easy. I would suggest at least 6k blocks from spawn in either direction.

Keep in mind that /random has a 24 hour cool down, so use it wisely. Set a home by doing /warp set <name> and go there by doing /warp <name>. (See your warps by doing /warp list)

You should make a base high in the sky or below ground, and hide it effectively. From there you just have to play normal survival. Mine and craft things, etc. The rest will come.

P.S.
I suggest selling in the /shop. You should also make/join a team to help with resources, PvP, etc.
