    Question: I try and play with the least amount of particles, to decrease lagg. The only thing is, when I turn off particles, I cannot see explosions from law, ray, grenades, etc. What particles do I have to turn on to see them?

    I just tried this out, with particles set on "Minimal" I could still see explosions, but not the particles of a molotov nor the shot of a raygun. With particles on "Decreased" I was able to see everything.

    Are you using Optifine?

    To my knowledge, you need to have particles on.
    If Optifine has a setting were you can disable some, leave explosions and redstone dust enabled.
