    The compasses track people but the pointer doesn't point in the direction the player is. I find myself having to go each and every direction to try and find the player and kill him.

    Compasses do work. If you do not have Optifine, you will have to turn on particles to all I believe. If you do have optifine, go to Animations > Terrain Animations and make sure that is on
